When we finish up I go back over to the corner we're I'd been hanging out, and now no one is talking to me -- no more smiles, no more jokes, the older woman wearing the OBAMA teeshirt was now deliberating looking away from me, the mother of the little girl with the crayoned sign was holding her shoulders so she couldn't be seen by me. Just like that, I'm shunned. It honestly took me a few beats to figure out why. It's because the reporter had identified me by creed, "atheist", so now I'm not someone these good people want to interact with.
Zachary, I'm new to this Meetup group, so I'm only slightly familiar with your dealings with the memorial service.  Might it have been reasonable for people to assume that you were religious if you were hanging out outside a religious service?  (Leaving aside the good question of why a community response to the bombings, attended by government leaders, was organized as a religious service.)  I wonder how much of the reaction you experienced had to do with the context of the situation, and whether it would have been different if you had all met someplace else.
