The words 'under god' were added in 1954 or 5 during the 'red scare' era.

Did the Pledge not always include those words - "One Nation Under God"?

Hi Zac'

Although I've been on the B.A.ers mailing list for years, I've only attended one meeting, in 2003. I am going to be there tomorrow. I'm 67 years old and I never thought I'd be able to attend an event like this. How will I find you?

As for why 'under god' should not be a part of the pledge of alliegence. I am required by law to pledge an oath to something I don't believe exists, thereby refuting my own belief each time I recite the pledge. If the pledge were to be amended to the way it was originally written, the way I first learned it in a Catholic school, no one would be required to refute their belief.

Dear BAers:

I trust that you know about tomorrow's demonstration contesting the use of the Pledge of Allegiance in Massachusetts public schools, given the presence of the divisive "under God" clause. If not, go to this link and read all about it, and why you should be there tomorrow morning: http://www.meetup.com/bostonatheists/events/137579192/.

We're preparing a handout flyer to be distributed to press and passersby, which lays out the secular case for supporting the case against the Pledge as it stands. I'd like to ask members of the mailing list to contribute their own perspective to this sheet, by replying with an answer to this question:

What is your view of the discriminatory daily exercise of the Pledge of Allegiance (with "under God" clause) in Massachusetts public schoolrooms?

I'll include as large a selection of your responses as I can in our materials for the public. If you wish to be identified by name, please indicate that's the case; otherwise, just let me know your age, city of residence, and if you like, your profession and number of children.

All best,

Zachary
