Hadoop and Big Data in the Windows Azure Cloud

We just learned that Wenming Ye (@wenmingye, blog) will be in town in July and we can't resist taking advantage of the opportunity to host him as a speaker. Wenming is an expert in Big Data and Hadoop and he will be speaking about the Windows Azure Hadoop offering (called HDInsight) which is an on-demand service that works in concert with other cloud assets.

Come join us as Wenming explains what this is, how it works, and how we can take advantage of it in our own applications.

DETAILS

Practical Big Data and Big Compute

There’s a proliferation of Weapons of Mass Data Processing. Hadoop employs disk-based batch processing for large scale data analytics bounded only by hardware. However, real-world problems need solutions that bridge the gap between batch and now.

In this introductory talk, we will provide an overview on Map Reduce, in-memory, NoSQL tools, and their roles in solving real-time analytics problems. In addition, we'll cover in detail on how to get started on popular Big data tools, HDInsight, STORM, and SPARK on Windows Azure.

About Wenming Ye

After completing his graduate work at CU Boulder, Mr. Ye joined SRI International, where he focused on design and development of innovative wireless, handheld, and Web-based simulation tools and services. Mr. Ye returned to Boulder as a developer on the commercialization team at Tech-X Corp, where he developed and productized large-scale HPC software. Mr. Ye is currently a Senior Research Program Manager responsible for Cloud-based Big Data and Big Compute projects at Microsoft Research.

Thanks so much, Wenming, for a fantastic look at Big Data, Azure, and how we need to keep "physics" in mind to really understand.

Bill - The topic on ETW and SLAB was pretty interesting. Could you share the slides and some of the sample code if possible?

Wenming mentioned about 1/2 price deal on Windows Azure. Can anybody tell me how to get that deal?

    July 25, 2013

    • Bill W.

Ram - Windows Azure features often are offered at a discount while in preview. HDInsight - Microsoft's "Hadoop as a Cloud Service" offering - is currently in preview and offered at 50% off. You can read more about the service here: http://www.windowsazu... -- and the pricing details (which explain the 50% off while in preview) are here: www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/services/hdinsight/?fb=en-us

Parking is directly under the building. You can only enter NERD from the memorial drive side ( you can exit from the back ) You'll see the driveway on the side of the building leading to the garage. Take your ticket with you so you can pay inside on your way out. After 4PM only 10 dollars.
