Grave Undertakings: A Tour of Death in Boston

Get into the Halloween spirit and join us on a tour through 3 of Boston's burying grounds.

If you ever wanted to learn about the customs surrounding death and dying in Puritan New England, or you simply enjoy walking among the dead, Grave Undertakings might be for you.

The death experts will take you from the King's Chapel Burying Ground, where you will learn of the mysterious Charlestown Carver (now, there's an idea for a Halloween costume), to the Granary Burying Ground, and on to the Central Burying Ground. The symbolism on the grave markers, the practices, traditions, and the whereabouts of some people you might know will be discussed during the walk.

This pre-Halloween event is $15 ($5 if you are a Boston By Foot card-carrying member -- see www.bostonbyfoot.org/join/member for more information).

Excellent tour! I learned a lot about burial customs and grave carvings to sprinkle into my Heart of the Freedom Trail and North End tours.

I so enjoyed the relaxed tour to the three burying grounds. I was pleased to learn some of Boston's history, Puritan customs, and grave stone symbolism. Fun!

    1. How can i pay for this? I am interested in joining this.
    2. Is there any contact number available which I can reach?
    3. Is "King's Chapel Burying Ground" the actual meeting place or will the group meet somewhere else initially?

      1. You can pay in cash when you show up for the tour, or you can go here http://www.bostonbyfo... and click the "Buy now" button and pay by credit card.

      2. The office isn't open on weekends, so I don't think a contact number will help. 3. King's Chapel Burying Ground is the actual meeting place. Look for people with bags or buttons with the BBF logo

Pardon my ignorance, but if I am paying for a four-person BBF membership, why am I restricted to only bringing two other guests?

Hmm, naturally Boston By Foot members can come on the tour with thr full compliment based on their membership level at no cost. Justin Winsor is a fab historian but maybe did not check the default guest setting methinks.

      Ah, I hope you're correct!

I have a question on this tour. The BBF website quotes the price as @12 per person and members free. Is this a different tour?

    October 13, 2012

    • Gretchen G

It is only $12 and it is free for card-carrying members of Boston by Foot!
