Data visualization: Where people fall in love with data

This month, we are delighted to welcome's founder, Hjalmar Gislason to the Boston area. He graciously agreed to come talk to us all and will even provide us with some pizza and beer!

Data visualization is often where people realize the real value in underlying data. Good data visualization tools are therefore vital for many data projects to reach their full potential.

Many companies have realized this and are looking for the best solutions to address their data visualization needs. There is plenty of tools to choose from, but even for relatively simple charting, many have found themselves with limited options. As the requirements pile up, options become scarce: Cross-browser compatibility, server-side rendering, iOS support, interactivity, full control of branding, look and feel … and you’ll find yourself compromising, or – worse yet – building your own visualization library!

Building our data publishing platform – – we’ve certainly been faced with the aforementioned challenges. In this meetup we’ll share our findings and approach for others to avoid our mistakes and learn from our – sometimes hard – lessons learned.

Hjalmar is a serial entrepreneur, founder of four startups in the gaming, mobile and web sectors since 1996. Prior to launching DataMarket, Hjalmar worked on new media and business development for companies in the Skipti Group (owners of Iceland Telecom) after their acquisition of his search startup – Spurl. DataMarket is based largely on Hjalmar's vision of the need for a global exchange for structured data.

Hjalmar is moving to Cambridge to build out DataMarket's business operations in the US.

Speaker was interesting, interested in hearing from others, and revealed a lot about the open source tools his company uses to create visualizations

Data Market is pretty neat. Very glad to have heard about it from a founder.

Great Meetup! I really enjoyed both Hjalmar's presentation and the subsequent discussions.

The presenter shared some really useful tools for doing web based data visualization. I definitely plan to look into Data Market/Protovis/D3 for some of my future projects.
