Here is some updates on the group. We met at Diesel cafe on Sunday, for our first meeting. It went really well! In attendance were myself, Jack, Alex, Wendy, Pamela, Steve, and Shaun. (It was great to meet all of you!) Seven people for the first meeting was a great strong start!
We introduced ourselves, discussed our backgrounds with feminism, and got to know each other a bit. We also discussed the future of the club. We decided on meeting about every two weeks, with each week having a discussion theme
(but being open to digressions). We also decided that each meeting there will be a discussion leader, (anyone can volunteer), who will come prepared with some information maybe or some questions to facilitate the conversation. That way, there is no one leader and the club is more of a collective effort.
Some of the potential topics we thought of:
What is feminism
Stigmas against feminism
Feminism in the black community
Being a male feminist
Careers with children/childcare
Women's hostility/competition with one another
Shaving & Makeup - body modifications
I recommend that for our first few discussions, we avoid the really heavy topics like rape, FGM, sex work, etc. and start with more
general topics like: what is feminism, stigmas against feminism, gender roles, etc.
However, I led the first meeting, so its someone else's turn to lead the next one! If you'd like to volunteer, please send me an email, especially if you have an idea of what discussion topic you want to lead. Please volunteer asap, because once we have a discussion leader I'll post the next meeting and the topic for that meeting!!
For all those who missed the first meeting, I hope you will be able to make this next one!
