I believe the topic has been picked. Talk to Jack and Pam.

I don't think street harrassment was mentioned previously.

Hi Pam,
Thanks for your message! Definately bring some leading questions, in case we get stuck. I think Jack is going to lead, but it never hurts to have additional help in leading a meeting! (Talk to Jack). So if we can't use the lucy parson's center that bar sounds fine, as long as you think we'll have enough space!

I'm excited.?

Oh shoot, I'm not very good at reply vs. reply all.? Or checking the home page on meetup.? I just noticed that Jack is already leading the discussion.? No worries at all.? I'll be there -- wherever we decide!

All the best,
Pam

Hey Tina,

I hope your break is still going well!? I'm back at work :-( but I'm looking forward to the next meeting.? I'd like to volunteer to lead the discussion group Sunday.? I think you're right about staying away from more loaded topics like FGM.?

Being that we might have some new faces... it'd be great to start with: what is feminism; what does feminism mean in your life; how do you practice it; and gender roles.? I can prepare a few leading questions and I'll be ready to sort of facilitate if we get heated or woefully off track or something, which I can't imagine :-)

My roommate Mandi really wanted to come but she'll be in NYC for the weekend.? She's already suggested some really interesting topics to me that I think she wants to save for when she can make a meeting -- like gender absolutism and women in business.

Have you thought about where we might meet?? I have an idea for a place downtown -- it sounds kind of cheesy but it's spacious with a good vibe, and it should be relatively uncrowded at 3 on Sunday.? It's a bar in the Faneuil Hall neighborhood called The Black Rose.? It is the kind of place I would call first though.? Without knowing whether we can use the Lucy Parsons Center, this came to mind as a nice open space that'd be a little easier for some of our downtown friends to get to.? Just a thought anyway!

Thanks Tina!? Stay warm :-)

All the best,
Pam

Hey MJ,

FGM is female genital mutilation, which as you can imagine, is a very intense topic.

Hi MJ,

Thanks for participating in the email discussion. There were two men, and five women with age ranging from early twenties to early thirties.

If I can attend again (I will be super busy with work, school, and family obligations until July), I might bring some favorite quotes of mine. Feminist rhetoric can be very much fun and very eloquent.

Thanks for reading this,

Steve

Hi Tina, I look forward to attending the next meeting. Black Feminism is an interest of mine. What is FGM?

Were there more men than women?

Hey feminists!

Here is some updates on the group. We met at Diesel cafe on Sunday, for our first meeting. It went really well! In attendance were myself, Jack, Alex, Wendy, Pamela, Steve, and Shaun. (It was great to meet all of you!) Seven people for the first meeting was a great strong start!

We introduced ourselves, discussed our backgrounds with feminism, and got to know each other a bit. We also discussed the future of the club. We decided on meeting about every two weeks, with each week having a discussion theme (but being open to digressions). We also decided that each meeting there will be a discussion leader, (anyone can volunteer), who will come prepared with some information maybe or some questions to facilitate the conversation. That way, there is no one leader and the club is more of a collective effort.

Some of the potential topics we thought of:
What is feminism
Stigmas against feminism
Feminism in the black community
Being a male feminist
Children/Parenting
Consent/Sexuality
Sex work
Pornography
Media representation
Political representation
Abortion/Reproductive rights
Careers with children/childcare
Gender roles
Gender passing
Women's hostility/competition with one another
Body Image
Lesbians/LGBT/Queer
Shaving & Makeup - body modifications
FGM

I recommend that for our first few discussions, we avoid the really heavy topics like rape, FGM, sex work, etc. and start with more general topics like: what is feminism, stigmas against feminism, gender roles, etc.

However, I led the first meeting, so its someone else's turn to lead the next one! If you'd like to volunteer, please send me an email, especially if you have an idea of what discussion topic you want to lead. Please volunteer asap, because once we have a discussion leader I'll post the next meeting and the topic for that meeting!!

For all those who missed the first meeting, I hope you will be able to make this next one!
