Saxophonist James Carter in Cambridge-May 16, 2009

The 8th installment of the Bennett Alliance Concert Series is May 16, 2009, featuring saxophonists James Carter and Daniel Bennett. Saxophonist James Carter ( has performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Sonny Rollins, Aretha Franklin, the late Julius Hemphill, Ronald Shannon Jackson, the Charles Mingus Big Band, soprano Kathleen Battle, David Murray, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Ginger Baker, and many others. He appeared in the 1994 PBS telecast of “Live At Lincoln Center” and portrayed saxophonist Ben Webster in Robert Altman's 1996 film, “Kansas City.” James Carter recently topped Downbeat's annual Critics Poll in the Baritone Saxophone category for the third year in a row. Carter will be joined by Gerard Gibbs on Hammond B3 and Leonard King on drums.

Saxophonist Daniel Bennett ( is most known for his unique musical mix of jazz, folk, and minimalism. This "Folk-Jazz" style has earned the Daniel Bennett Group a dedicated cult following in both jazz and folk circles. The Daniel Bennett Group has shared concert stages with Bill Frisell, the Charlie Hunter Trio, Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin and Wood), David Fiuczynski (Screaming Headless Torsos), Denison Witmer, and LA-based synth-pop group Joy Electric. In January of 2008, the Daniel Bennett Group released the epic full length album, The Legend of Bear Thompson on the Bennett Alliance label. Bennett will be joined by guitarist Brant Grieshaber, bassist Jason Davis, and Rick Landwehr on drums.

Bennett Alliance ( is a record label and production company, founded in 2003 by saxophonist Daniel Bennett. The Bennett Alliance Concert Series is an ongoing concert event at the restored Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre. Recent Bennett Alliance events have featured the Charlie Hunter Trio, Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood), Jerry Bergonzi, Daniel Bennett Group, David Fiuczynski (Sreaming Headless Torsos), Quartet of Happiness, Zyrah's Orange, and Joy Electric.
