Boston Karaoke Meetup - September 2012

  • Sep 8, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Dear Boston Karaoke Meetup Members:

Announcing the September Boston Karaoke Meetup for 2012. We have the Karaoke Lounge reserved just for us from 6-9PM.

I am going to try something a little different this month. Given the number of people who "sign up" and are "no shows", I have decided to ask people pay up front when they sign up using Paypal.

I am sorry for the inconvenience, but this will make it better for those who really want to attend.

I am disabling guests to make sure that I can create a Name Tag for everyone. If you have a guest, have them register and RSVP for themselves. Make sure your name is correct on the site, that's what I use to create your Name Tag.

To make sure you have a spot, please sign up early.

Regards,
-Phil

Great, as usual, but there were several more amazing singers.

This was my first meetup and I had a GREAT time. I found the people at the meetup very friendly to a newcomer and I enjoyed the music.

Thanks everyone (esp. the peeps down back!) for being so welcoming and showing me what to do at my first karaoke ever (well, except for an unfortunate kinda drunk one song at gov. bradford years ago!). I have severe stage fright and I'm hoping this will help lessen that.

Does anyone know what the parking situation is at this venue? It may determine the shoes I decide to wear! ;-P

Vanea right outside the Courtside is plenty of parking right near the door! No worries ever on parking nearby. See you tomorrow, Judi

$5 every month/event is a small price tp pay (even if you lose it by not showing) to have an exclusive venue to sing. thanks for organizing every month Phil. I will continue to RSVP every month and pay my $5 ahead of time. If I have to cancel, then so be it. I wouldn't even expect the $5 to be returned.

I think we should be more appreciative of the time and trouble Phil takes to host these events. I've been there when very few people showed up and Phil paid the balance. Five dollars is pretty cheap--you could spend that at Starbucks.

The only problem with this is, for those of us who would RSVP "yes" and cancel later when we decide there's a conflict, we wouldn't get our money back. At least I don't think we would. I do agree though that this might be effective, as long as people aren't turned off by the idea and fail to sign up at all. I can't attend this one, but I might hesitate to RSVP at all with this policy if I didn't get my money back.

Phil, I think your idea is right on!!!

Matt, Thanks for the suggestion. I had been doing that and one time everyone who RSVP'd came. We had close to 40 people. That month, everyone had only one song. I received a few complaints and a few people never came back. Since then, I have kept the attendance cap to low 20's so that everyone should get at least 2 songs.

However last month I end up getting just 12, the no shows blocked people who wanted to come. so I am giving this a try. Let's see how it goes.

Philip, I had a similar issue with some volleyball events I run. About 60% of people signed showed. So I simply opened up the sign-up cap such that the expected turnout would be reasonable. AND: I keep attendance and report no-shows, which stays in their meetup record.

    Ramon,
The issue is not collecting $5 at the event. However, some people sign up and then do not show up. They are taking slots away from people who want to come, so this makes it better for people who would like to attend.

    Philip,
What is this Paypal thing now, paying in advance?. Is it that you don't trust attending members when they go there and pay the $5 in the karaoke night?.
