The Watch City Festival is a fundraising event for the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham, Massachusetts. Founded in cooperation with SteamPuffin, the first festival was a one-day festival held in the museum on May 1st, 2010, which attracted an unexpected 1,000 visitors through the day.
For 2011, the Museum enlisted the help of the City of Waltham and local businesses to create the first ever city-wide Steampunk festival, literally taking over the downtown area of Waltham and transforming it into the first ever living, breathing Steampunk City for an entire weekend.
On May 11th & 12th, 2013, the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation presents the fourth annual Watch City Festival! This is a city-wide event that celebrates the imagination, history and ingenuity behind Steampunk. For one weekend the city of Waltham is transformed into an alternate reality “trapped in time” where the lines between science fiction and the industrial revolution are blurred to bring guests into an immersive experience like no other!
The main events will take place on Saturday and Sunday at locations in central Waltham, MA. Citizens of Watch City are also invited to join us for special preview events the evening of Friday, May 10th.
Guests will be transported into a world where dirigibles and hot air balloons race the skies, an old-fashioned midway entertains the crowds, and there are unique performers, musicians, and characters at every corner all telling the story of their world. International published authors and entertainers known nationwide will fill our bookstores and auditoriums. The town common will be transformed into a bazaar filled with vendors offering fine leatherwork, costumes and wearables, gadgets and jewelery along with buskers and demonstrations that tip their hat to a realm forgotten. There is even a race for Mayor to put the best man or woman into the seat to make decisions on the future of Watch City!
The event is family-friendly but will also offer some adult entertainment in the form of “Steampunk After Dark” events which will entice guests with musical acts, burlesque dancers and carnival side-show performances.
What is Steampunk? For the past thirty years a group of individuals, fed up with plastic and streamlined designs, have been looking to the Victorian, Edwardian and Industrial eras for inspiration. Steampunk grew out of the Science Fiction genre in the 1980’s. At its core steampunk asks the question, “what would the world look like if modern technology were available when steam was king, corsets were mandatory and man was just learning to fly?” Since its inception the movement has infiltrated mainstream fashion, art, interior design, literature, technology, and entertainment.
