Developer Dorm Room (PHP Hacker Camp)

Do you have projects you've been dying to work on, but you're not sure how to get started? Are you looking for a way to get away from the distractions of home life so you can focus on development? Do you work better in a collaborative environment where you can bounce ideas off another developer?

Boston PHP Developer Dorm Room!
We will provide a wifi-enabled room for 8 hours where developers like you can come together to work on your own idea, get some help from someone more experienced in a certain topic, mentor others, contribute to an open-source project or even come up with a new group project.

Experience the synergy created when like-minded energetic individuals come together to make things happen. We will also provide a space for small spontaneous presentations and learning sessions.

Want to show off your new site or work on your pitch in front of a small group? Or maybe you would like to give a brief 15-30 minute crash course on a specific topic.

This will be a casual, come-and-go-as-you-please event with no schedule or pre-defined agenda. The primary focus is to bring developers together and let them do what they do best. The details are all up to you!

If there is a specific topic you would like to present on or learn about, or if you have an idea you’d like to start discussing, please comment on it here.

This should be a regular event. It's great community building - relaxing, light, engaging, and full of learning.

Thank you Michael for putting this session together. I got there late, but brought bagels. Great environment to work in. Next time I'll try to network more.

I had a great time with hacking, helping and development-related discussions. This is the first Dorm Room event we've had, so we weren't sure what exactly to expect. A big thank you to all the awesome people who came out and made it successful. Hopefully we can do this again really soon! Oh and a big thanks to Michael (and Adam?) for making the pizza happen! :)

Awesome - great conversations and pizza at the end! Plenty of learning and coding. The dorm room spilled over to a sandwich shop down the street.

@Andrew, I'm not sure about every weekend but I would think once a month or bi-monthly might be ideal for the great opportunity to check-in and work with others.

So guys...I just realized that I left my VERY IMPORTANT flash drive at NERD. Does that mean that I lost it for good???

This was my first time attending any type of meetup and I loved it! I was energized by the conversations, enjoyed meeting the people, and learned many, many new things by just listening. I am looking forward to attending meetups more often. The Boston PHP "People Helping People" idea really held true. Thank you.

Had some great conversations and interactions with some very intelligent people today. Got some very helpful feedback and ideas on how to improve and grow JobWand. Extremely grateful to all with whom I spoke with.

I liked learning from presenters and having the opportunity to collaborate, but found the environment too distracting to get any real work done.

The PHP OOP / Framework crash course sounds like a great idea- I'm also considering picking up a framework. Netbeans is getting a bit unwieldy..

I'm currently in the process of setting up Zend Server and Studio on my laptop as prep for tomorrow. Working on a custom WordPress dev project for uploading and managing large files in various formats. Just hope I can drag myself outta bed early enough tomorrow morning to make it into Cambridge in time! *;-)

I may be able to provide help on Python, Django, jQuery, Javascript, CSS, and Google AppEngine. These are the technologies I used to build JobWand.com. I plan to swing by around 10am, give or take an hour. Will probably be around for about 2-3 hours.

@Jonathan: I'm going to try and get there between 9-10am. Feel free to shoot me an email if you don't see me: sscovil at gmail.

  • Jonathan B.

@Shaun Scovil: Thanks. I'm really interested in WordPress, because I've seen and heard of its capabilities. I'll be looking for you also. What time will you be there? @Susan: That would great! You know what, I think that the best thing to do is post it on the Boston PHP group page on Facebook. Maybe someone will be willing to help. I will do that once I get a chance. Here is the URL to the group page if you don't know it yet: http://www.facebook.com/groups/111169098937541/

Hope to make it the next one because I do have a project that I'd like to get some input on or work collaboratively on.
@Jonathan Barronville: I'm also interested in starting to work with Frameworks and moving into OOP. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this weekend, but maybe we can find someone who's interested in giving a crash course and we can get a group together?

@Shaun Scovil: I'm really interested in WordPress development, but I only used it for posting on blogs before and never did development using it. I know PHP...maybe you can help me with WordPress development tomorrow and make me an expert [:)]???
@Michael Bourque: If you know anyone who will be working with a PHP framework (I'm trying to start working with frameworks) and is willing to give a crash course on it or make a tutorial, if you could give me a heads up, that would be great. Thank You!

    August 12, 2011

I'll be working on a custom WordPress theme and (if time allows) maybe a plugin or two, if anyone is interested in collaborating...

A topic I would like to learn more about is ORM/DAL. Who uses what and why? I'm getting familiar with Doctrine-core, which also happens to be the default ORM for Symfony framework. Would love to chat about this with someone who has experience with more than one maybe...

I'll definitely be there with my WIMP and LAMP stack (a.k.a my dual boot laptop). Really excited about this one, I guess the question is will there be an unlimited supply of caffeine?

I'm interested in giving a crash course on PHP, MySQL, HTML, and CSS in a 2 hour class for anyone interested.
