As a web developer, have you ever wished you could develop applications for desktop, phones and tablets but were intimidated by the steep learning curve associated with developing native applications?
Join Boston PHP member and Microsoft Technical Evangelist Chris Bowen to discuss how Windows 8 will attempt to bridge the development gap between web developers and native application developers. Chris has been attending our Boston PHP meetups for years and we are excited to have him take the podium.
Description:
This meetup will be a Look at Windows 8 and Using HTML5, CSS3 & JavaScript to Create Windows Store Apps
This session is an introduction to Windows 8, from the user experience to developer opportunities and options, including using your existing web skills to create Windows Store apps. Much of the time will focus on demos, showing how to use HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript skills to leverage Windows 8 capabilities such as live tiles, notifications, sharing, search, and more. We'll also look at what's new with Internet Explorer 10, Visual Studio 2012, and Blend to help make development and design easier.
About Chris:

Good presentation, but more of a Windows 8 overview and intro to their App store. Would have liked more technical information. Learned about the dev tool Blender, which may be a timesaver.

Thanks for the interesting talk/demo. Wish you had more time to cover the certification process, what's allowed, what's not, etc. (e.g., can we build an appstore or some other store and post it in MS's appstore, and how would that work monetarily? how about emulators, adult content, etc.? - the competing OS'es answer these differently). Also, regarding multi-displaying more than one app at a time, technically yes, official Android and iOS only support one. However, there is an Android firmware mod called Cornerstone (Youtube has demos) that allows running and displaying up to three apps at the same time. The feature/functionality was presented to Google, but they declined to incorporate it officially. Still, on stock Android, there is an app called "Stick It Video Player" that will play video(s) in a resizable window(s) on the screen, even on stock Android, while you are using another application, which is a very specific implementation of displaying multiple apps simultaneously.

This Meetup was awesome! Chris is one of the best speakers I've seen so far. He made it interesting yet very informative (which is something you don't get that often) and I felt like I learned something. We need more people like him in the world! [:)].

It was a great peek a what's new for Windows 8 Apps. Definitely good to learn that Blend, and other development tools are available to try out for free. It looks enviably fun and it may be time to add a Windows 8 device to my development testing environment.
