jQuery jAM, Season 2

  • November 4, 2012 · 12:00 AM

jQuery jAM, our virtual self-study group for beginners, is returning for Season 2. The focus will be jQuery Mobile. If you would like to learn jQuery Mobile from the ground up, consider joining us. Tell your friends and co-workers to join in the fun.

The format of a virtual self-study group is as follows:

~ Each participant purchases the same textbook (Sams Teach Yourself jQuery Mobile in 24 Hours).

~ Each participant commits to read one chapter per week, complete the exercises and post a link to your completed work.

~ Each participant obtains assistance by posting questions to a discussion area set up on the Boston PHP Message Board for each chapter.

Note: There is no classroom instruction. There are no webcasts. There are no scheduled appointments of any kind. However, jAM Sessions have been known to spring up like food trucks in various Boston area communities. These jAM Sessions are informal gatherings set up by jQuery jAM participants.

How do I get started?

~ Become a member of Boston PHP, if are not already a member.
~ Register for jQuery jAM, Season 2. Simply RSVP: Yes
~ Purchase a book (the only program cost). Simply visit the Boston PHP Store and order Sams Teach Yourself jQuery Mobile in 24 Hours in one of two formats.

Full disclosure: Boston PHP Meetup receives a small commission on each sale which helps fund Meetup activities.

When your book arrives, start your virtual learning by reading one chapter at a time, completing the exercises and posting a link to your completed work.

FAQs:

Q: Do I need to learn jQuery before I start to learn jQuery Mobile?

A: It is not strictly necessary to know jQuery to begin using the jQuery Mobile framework; however, you will have a considerable advantage over other participants if you understand some of the concepts of the core jQuery framework. This will be especially prevalent when working with binding and events.

Q: How long will the course last?

A: We will cover 24 chapters in the book, so 24 weeks starting November 4 and ending April 20. Refer to the jQuery jAM, Season 2 Master Discussion List for specific dates.

Q: Do I have to wait until November 4 to begin?

A: No need to wait. Feel free to begin by reading the Introduction once you obtain a copy of your book and proceed at a pace that best fits your current work/life situation.

Q: What if I have additional questions?

A: Simply post a reply below and you will receive a response.

Let's start jAMmin'!

    Let's Give Thanks

If you live in the Boston area and plan to attend this evening's Meetup, Web to Mobile and Back with Raizlabs, let's get together between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm and give thanks. Simply check in, grab a few slices of Thanksgiving pizza, and meet your fellow jAMmers in the lounge area outside the glass-enclosed presentation room. For those of you not in attendance, I wish to offer my thanks for the opportunity to jAM with you this Season.

Hopefully no one will think this is spamming or terribly off-topic, but for Veteran's Day I found a Living Social deal where, for $25, the USO will provide $60 towards a Warrior Care Pack or Other Morale Efforts for Wounded Troops and T-Shirt for Purchasers. http://www.livingsocial.com/cit...

Blessings to our veterans and thank you for your service.

Hi Gene: I have the book on Safari Online; could I just make a donation to the group? Where and how could I do that?

      1 · November 11, 2012

    • Gene B.

@Vickie -- No need to make a donation to the group. Simply recognize/honor a veteran today. May I suggest the Bob Woodruff Foundation.

@Ken -- Welcome! Glad to see you'll be Percolating and jAMmin' at the same time. The five remaining Percolate chapters will take a little longer to complete. Fortunately, the early jAM Hours are less challenging and time consuming, so you should be able to stay on pace with both groups until you free up more time in December.

Is it too late to join this meetup? I don't see an RSVP button anywhere. Email me if there's another way, because I want to do it! I had such a good time in the virtual HTML5 class, even though I didn't post much I read the entire book and did the exercises on my own.

    Thanks,

Thanks Amanda for pitching in and clarifying. In summary, there are no meetings or appointments of any kind. Once you have the book, you work at your own pace whenever and wherever it is most convenient and productive for you. I will be sending an official "let's begin" e-mail within the next 24 hours with further details.
