Do we have to go to a special website?

kodjo, you can get the practice files for the book here: http://www.larryullma...
But you don't really need them, since all the material is in the book as well. I downloaded those files but, so far, have not used them at all. I prefer typing stuff in from the book in order to get my fingers used to typing HTML and PHP stuff! *;-) |

@kodjo -- The only thing you'll really need is a copy of the book and access to this discussion area. That said, you will need to post your work online somewhere which will require access to a web server. We do not provide you with practice space.
You will also need to download some free software tools. These are detailed in the Introduction and Appendix A. I'll have more to say about "Getting Started" in an e-mail to the entire group about two weeks before we officially start on September 9. No need to wait until then, however. William has already jumped right in. I agree with his approach. The most effect method for learning the material is to type the code from the book directly into a text editor. This enhances "muscle memory." Thanks, William, for responding to this discussion -- percolating like a team! kodjo, welcome aboard! |

I started PHP self-study about half a month ago using PHP Solutions by David Powers. That was before I found and joined this PHP Percolate Season recently. So far I have finished the first 5 chapters of that book. Now I am wondering if I should continue with PHP Solutions until Percolate starts on September 9 and switch to PHP for the Web then or it would be better to switch to PHP for the Web now. Can anyone with experience with both books give me some suggestions? I'm not asking which book is better. I just want to know based on the contents/coverage of the books, which path would be better. I am pretty new to both PHP and MySQL.
Many thanks in advance! |

@Bing -- Kudos on taking the initiative to start in on PHP Solutions, the book we used for Seasons 1, 2 and 3. Feel free to post your work for each of the first five chapters to the discussion area for Season 3:
http://www.bostonphp.... You've already gotten through some of the more challenging work: Chapter 5 (Bringing Forms to Life). My suggestion: Put PHP Solutions (Season 3) on hold and start in on PHP For the Web (Season 4). At this point you'll find the first few chapters in Season 4 fairly basic, but a good refresher. Chapter 3 (HTML Forms & PHP) will start to reinforce the material you've already covered. By starting now you can get out in front of Season 4 and hopefully, complete PHP for the Web early. Then. you can go back and complete PHP Solutions. By completing both books you will have a real solid introduction to both PHP and MySQL. Glad you'll be percolating with us. Bing,
Having completed PHP Solutions and now working on PHP for the Web; I would say that the former moves a bit quicker and goes a bit farther than the latter. PHPftw certainly is good for someone who has little programming experience and sometimes mentions useful functions that Solutions did not cover. I would agree with Gene; finish PHPftw first and then Solutions would be a faster elaboration on what you just covered. |
