PyCon on the Charles, part 1

In preparation for their presentations at PyCon US, Jessica and Nate will rehearse with us! Thanks to Smarterer for sponsoring the night.

Jessica McKellar: Keynote [All Levels]

Jessica is a director of the Python Software Foundation, and will be speaking inspirationally about Python.

Nate Aune: Deploy your Python app in 5 min with a PaaS [Intermediate]

How can you avoid servers and get back to coding? Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) makes deployment easy. But which PaaS do you choose and how do you get started? This talk will examine several of the leading PaaS providers and discuss their pros/cons. We'll also give examples for how to deploy the same app to each of them to see the differences.

I finally got the slides posted from my talk "Deploy Python apps in 5 minutes with a PaaS" including synchronized audio (thanks to Phil Skaroulis for recording the talk). http://appsembler.com/blog/depl...

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback! Hope to see some of you at PyCon next week!

Also related to Jessica's talk someone mentioned http://www.simplyscala.com/ as a great resource for learning Scala in the browser which reminded me of http://www.codeskulptor.org/ that is being used @ https://class.coursera.org/inter...

Here is the video screencast showing how I deployed Mezzanine (a Django app) to Dotcloud in ~5 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=... I'll post the full slides soon - having a problem with Slideshare taking forever to process the PDF doc.

The Boston python user group meetups are always great, and this one was no different. Good luck on your presentations @pycon Jessica and Nate!

It was a good event. Good talks. Good people.

Suggest to the speakers that they do not ask the audiences questions. It's a waste of presentation time and serves no purpose. Also avoid too many statistics. Present them in graphs

    • Tony Garcia

It's a matter of opinion whether asking the audience questions "is a waste of time". I had no problem with questions being asked of the audience. I feel it's a good way to engage the audience and make them think.

For my presentation tonight, I'm inviting folks to ask their questions in advance and vote on proposed questions. This will help shape my presentation so I can focus on the most pressing questions. Propose and vote here! http://bit.ly/python-paas

I'm going to give up my spot for someone who is dying to go to this event, since I'm really more interested in the Part 2 talks and will be attending on Wednesday!

Are these talks geared toward beginners as well? Or do they require a pretty sophisticated understanding of network architecture, development and Python already?

    February 23

    • Ned Batchelder

Luisa, Nate has marked his talk as Intermediate. Jessica's keynote is meant for everyone. I'll update the other events with this information, thanks!

      February 23

    • Nate Aune

The talk is marked intermediate because it's geared towards developers who want to deploy their apps. But this could also be of interest to beginners who are just getting started with Django and want to know how to make their app easily accessible for others to look at.

PaaS=Platform As A Service, a form of cloud services. Other XaaS examples are: SaaS (Software As A Service), IaaS (Infrastructure As A Service)...etc.

Will this be a workshop at all? Will I need my laptop, or will this be more motivational?

    Either way, I am excited!

    Thank you,

Jessica, will you start out with the very basics of Python, something similar to the one that was held this past Saturday at MIT? Also, how long is your section? Thanks!
