Brooklyn Boulders Somerville Wednesday

It looks like BKBS will finally be opening its doors for the soft opening for First Ascents members and friends only. For those who would like to come check it out, hopefully we can make this a recurring event like with Metrorock.

The gym is the most conveniently climbing center located for those in the Boston - Cambridge - Somerville area, as it is located squarely between Union and Porter Square.

These are the climbing rates:

ADMISSION (Full day use, you can leave and come back!)

Day Pass - $22 (Students $18)
10 Pack - $225 (Students $169)
RENTALS
Shoes - $5
Harness - $5
Chalk Bag - $2
Full Gear Kit - $11

BKBS is the biggest climbing gym in the Northeast with most than 40,000 dedicated square feet of climbing, bouldering, yoga, and more. The bouldering walls reach up to 22 feet for comp, and usually 16 - 18 for regular use. The climbing wall features the enormous overhang known as the Tongue which I believe is more than 60 ft in length. It looks to be an awesome space and with the restrictions in July the walls should be wide open for climbing.

They are currently in a soft opening for members and friends of members. If you would like to climb and not a member, I am a member and will be by the front desk area and I will let you through after you pay for a day pass, etc. They also have had LivingSocial deals going on and off for access up until their grand opening July 31.

Hey Katherine, your assistance is greatly appreciated in helping people with the meet up. Sorry to everyone that I couldn't make it - had a birthday concert thing tonight - but will be there for the free climbing extravaganza next week!

I don't have a first ascent entrance, is it possible for me to still attend this climbing meetup?

PS the assistant manager's name is Chava and she's supposedly well aware of the group.

I'm a tinkerer who just moved to Somerville. Though I love indoor climbing, I'm looking for people to go bouldering outdoors!

Hi Thomas, the places to outdoor climb are Rumney (2 hours away in New Hampshire) or you can go to Quincy Quarries (about 10 miles south of Boston) for bouldering and limited top roping.

Hi Francesco, thanks a lot for your fast reply :-)
I think I will find it - and I will bring with my belt as well...
Good to know that there is no problem with doing the belay test.
I am really looking forward in learning to know some people!! - and of course to see wonderful Boston!

Just a short question: are there also places around Boston for outdoor climbing?
My conference ends Friday afternoon and I am leaving Sunday night...

So have a nice time at your concert!

Also Thomas, welcome to America and the wonderful city of Boston. The gym has literally been open for 3 weeks. It is on Tyler street, between Granite St and Properzi way: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=12+Tyler+St,+Somerville,+MA&hl=en&sll=42.036922,-71.683501&sspn=3.32906,5.141602&oq=12a+tyler&hnear=12+Tyler+St,+Somerville,+Massachusetts+02143&t=m&z=17&iwloc=A. The building is unmarked at the moment, it's possible it will have a sign out front but it's still hard to miss. It's a white building with clear glass doors above a small grey ramp.

Hi everyone. Please be aware I actually forgot to say yesterday, as I forgot when the concert I'm going to was, that I actually cannot make it. I know some people have already been so if you guys can provide pointers to the newcomers, that would be awesome. I really wish I could be there, as this will be the last meetup before the grand opening. I am almost always free on Wednesdays but this is just one of those times.

Everything will be the same as last time - meet on the bench by autobelay island. People who are 1st timers need to take a belay test - look for a BKBS employee in a black shirt and they will help you out. You shouldn't climb the walls until you are certified. The belay test is to show you can comfortably save a fall from a climber. If you want Thomas, you can also use the autobelays. But there is plenty of toproping and bouldering - whatever you'd like to do. The meetup is primarily for people to climb together, so to toprope or do lead with one another.

    Hi everybody,
its nice to have this opportunity to get in contact with some people! Just: I will need some help ;-)
I will just be the next week in Boston as I am visiting a conference. Its my first visit in B. (and in America ;-) )

So when I understand it right this gym is completely new and I can just enter when I come to the entrance at the right time with you you Francesco?

1st difficult point - My conference ends at about 18:15 (at the MIT) - perhaps I can skip the last parts.

2nd point - second problem: I checked the adress with street view - where is this entrance? I could not find it...

good thing: I will live in "Caldwell Avenue
Somerville, MA 02143" So its just some meters...

are there many possibilities for rope climbing? or more for bouldering - as i fly to USA space is a nice question - also what is required with these "belay-tests" Im not used to that. But I should pass (I am climbing for more than 15 years now)
    THX for all help
    Thomas Jack
    PS: write me on fb

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
