Tuckerman's First Ice

  • Pinkham Notch Visitor's Center

11.8 miles north on Route 16 from Route 302 in Bartlett, NH, Gorham, NH (map)

    44.387791 -71.173126

  • In the basement gear up area of the Visitor's Center.
  • Finally...time to burn those crappy rock shoes, put on real gear and go get some ice.  We will be climbing the early ice in Tuckerman Ravine.

Our climb begins with a long hike up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail to Ravine.  From there, we'll decide what to climb.  Most likely, it will be on the left side of the headwall.

You will need full winter climbing gear: technical climbing boots, crampons, ice axes, helmet, harness, two or more sets of gloves, balaclava, Gore-Tex outerwear, fleece, parka, etc.  Ideally, you should bring a 60 M rope (single or 2-half ropes) suitable for ice.

You will have to have some ice climbing and winter hiking experience to join us at this time.

More information will be provided as we get closer to the season.

Hi Chris- yeah sure, I can pick you up. I'll have to look at a map to see exactly where Malden is. May be an early start to the day, lol, but I'll gladly pick you up if you still need a ride.

Hey all, I have extra plastic boots (sz 11.5), spare crampons, an extra set of tools, rope, the start of an ice rack (7 screws, but a little over-weighted on the long side). I also have some harnesses, biners, belay devices, etc... Let me know if anybody needs/wants to borrow anything. I'll be bringing the spare tools regardless.

I would really like to go, but I need a ride from Boston, can anyone help me out? I have all the gear including a dry rope, but no ice screws. I have loads of experience climbing rock, but just starting out with ice so I am very eager to grab every experience I can.

Hi Ken, I just joined this meet up and really happy to see this event coming up. I have a solid winter hiking experience and basic with ice top rope. I'm planning to get more into ice climbing this winter, have all the gear, can also bring rope. Looking forward to December!

Are those your shoes that's on fire in that photo Ken?

My shoes, but photoshop'ed with fire from another pic. I was going to burn the old shoes, really, after climbing Reppy's, but figured I may not get the flames I wanted.

I dont have any real experience ice climbing. Although, I did climb Mt. Washington Jan[masked] with crampons in the snow. I realize this climb is alot more advanced and technical. I would need a majority of equipment you listed. Where is the best place to search for that stuff? Even with my minimal experience, do you think I can join you? My experience has to start somewhere.... what do you think?
