First BrainDJVJ meetup

Meetup overview

Are you interesting in using thoughts to communicate with computers? If so, then this Meetup is for you. We are seeking like minded individuals interested in building sensors and using brainwave signals for interactive art, performance, or even transcendental meditation. As a Meetup group we are focused on creating new technologies to enable brain to computer interfacing.

Presently we are measuring brainwave signals using a brainwave microphone of sorts, based on the technology of Masahiro Kahata. For over twenty year Masahiro has been perfecting biofeedback devices for brain-wave detection and visualization. His technology has been applied to interactive art, performance, as well as hyper-dimensional and transcendental meditation. Now he has opened up his technology for all to use.

Good first meeting. The meeting date was moved to meet the venue's holiday schedule.

    Hello All,

We are looking forward to meeting up with everyone at our first official Brain Wave Meetup at TechShop, this evening 7pm to 9pm. We encourage you to bring a project to demonstrate and ideas to share.

Show up early if you'd like a tour of the shop. The tours happen every 30minute and the last one is at 6:30pm.

    Hope to see you there!
    Brent

Where is everyone? There's four and a half of us here at Tempest since 7pm. If you guys decided to go elsewhere and this is still going on please post the where, we're still finishing our beers.

This is a topic I am very very interested in, but I cannot make the Friday meeting due to a meeting at 6pm. I could meet one of you on Friday earlier, or exchange by email, if that is possible instead.

Once again, we'll be right around the corner at the Tempest on Wednesday. We'll join together again on Friday at TechShop, where we'll have a video projector, and can share brainwave generated visuals and audio.

    Hi all,

TechShop is closing early on Wednesday, so we must move the official meetup to Friday the 23rd, 7pm. We're still having an unofficial meetup. We'll make this a bit of a planning session for Friday.

We'll meetup at the Tempest Bar, 431 Natoma St (between 5th St & Mary St) on Wednesday the 21st. It's just around the corner from TechShop on Mary Street at Natoma.

There will be a map and directions on the door at TechShop to help you find us. We'll make try to make yourselves obvious with plastic brainwave sculptures and headbands with wires sticking out.

Sorry for the last minute change of venue, but now you have the opportunity to help us plan for Friday, and get a head-start on transmuting your thoughts into a physical manifestation.

    See you then,

    Brent

I have zero experience and knowledge within this realm. I don't want to be a lame duck that doesn't add anything to the conversation but the subject highly interests me.

Will this be more of a hands-on presentation? Is their audience interaction? Is it okay to merely observe?

    Thank you!

paul, <<Is it okay to merely observe? >> ok. it is first meetup. i'd like to show what i did with brain interface. shear experience / knowledge. also i'm interest to know what kind of people are interested in those subject. can not to do many things in one meetup, depend on time but like to show some actual brain Visual interaction with some audience. Q&A.

yes. in case you can show it how works that will be nice. over one years ago one of my friend got that one to bring it my place. but i had no chance to see how works.

If I understand correctly, the electrodes are felt and kept wet by an electrolyte solution. The multitude of sensors are meant to increase the spatial resolution of the measurement. My concern is that these felt electrodes vary resistance during head movements. I'm guessing that's why there's an accelerometer built into the head band.

Thanks for demonstrating your work. Let's work on biofeed training before our first meetup. As mentioned, we can use generative images to help the user train.

For the initial training tests, I've already put together a sideshow using Processing. The slide remains on the screen until the user returns the restful state. This should help calibrate each session, catalogue an individual's response and compare them with the overall population.

    • masahiro kahata

that is nice. i can send brain wave rhythm via wife UDP/OSC also. then you can change slide based on, maybe later can do experience that way too.
