For a good night out at a country pub, I am riding to the Maidenwell Hotel on Saturday, camping, and returning Sunday morning.
The Maidenwell Hotel (formerly Kings Hotel) is located near the base of the Bunya Mountains, about 2 hours west of Brisbane.
The pub has a pig on the spit done on an open wood fire, very tasty and servings are generous.
We have done this trip for a few years now jointly with a another meetup group on morotcycles and this year, the Motorcycle Newbies meetup group are also invited.
As before, I will be riding and the car campers meet us at Maidenwell (route is provided) and we all get on famously. So we will be camping on soft grass next to the hotel.
I've spoken to the owner who is happy for us to do that. Camping is free. Gold coin for the showers. Piggy feast is $15.
If you prefer a room to camping, the has basic rooms $45 single, $55 double but there’s only a few and they can book out months ahead so be quick. Phone 0741646133. I will be camping.
On Saturday afternoon, those who don't want to sit on the pub deck under the big fig tree can do a short bushwalk and swim at nearby Coomba Falls. It has a deep natural swimming hole and striking granite cliffs.
Expect the bikes to arrive at Maidenwell early to mid-afternoon.
The ride home on Sunday is through more country roads via Esk or Hampton.
TO GET THERE:
The best route from Brisbane city is to head up the highway north to caboolture, turn west/right there at the signs to Woodford, Kilcoy, Blackbutt. At Yarraman turn right again at the Bunya Mtns sign and it will take you to Maidenwell. A bit over 2 hours.
Or if you live more west of the city, then follow Ipswich road, take the Toowoomba turnoff and then right up the Brisbane Valley Highway through Esk to Blackbutt, Yarraman, etc.
