Walk the circumference of Gold Creek Reservoir

Following the success of the Enoggera Reservoir circumnavigation (thanks again Jesse), how about we try the sister reservoir over the hill. Enoggera was the first dam built in Qld (2nd in Australia). Gold Creek Reservoir followed about 20 years later. The track is 5.5 km, so roughly half the length we did for Enoggera Reservoir. There is a short sidetrack leading to a hoop pine plantation. Each year there is a race called the pinnacle classic which incorporates the Gold Creek track.

The following website provides a pdf brochure for the dam.

If you are interested in the annual run, here is the website with info on that event. It was held this year on 12th April.

Those wishing to continue the day can arrange to go to a nearby coffee shop afterwards. As far as I know, there are no facilities at the reservoir other than toilets. There are facilities at Lake Manchester which is a short drive further out. Also, there are connecting tracks from Gold Creek Reservoir to both Lake Manchester and Enoggera Reservoir. So if you wish to have a BBQ after the walk you could go there.

If people wish to car pool, pickups could be done at Indooroopilly Railway Station, or possibly Brookfield Shopping Centre. Buses do go out that way but only as far as an aged care home about 5 km from the dam.

Any takers? :)

Really enjoyed this walk and lovely scenery. Don't let the 6.5 km misguide you - it was quite challenging and took 3 hours to complete. Don did a great job and I would definitely like to walk this more often!

OK Will look through my commitments and sort out another time to do the reverse. Also we should do something afterwards such as have coffee together, or a BBQ or a picnic. :)

There is another walk next Sunday (I cannot make that one as have another commitment), and I am busy on Sunday 1st. So I suggest Saturday 31st May. Before I book this time, is that ok for those who wish to go? Anyone who missed last Sunday's walk is also welcome. :)

We thoroughly enjoyed the Gold Creek Reservoir walk. It was challenging in places with fallen branches, rocks, slippery in places but it tested our fitness. Don was great as our leader. All participants very friendly.

This will probably be my last missive before the event. I would suggest a few things.

Last time I went with a group, all those with shorts on came back with bloody scratches on their legs. So I would recommend wearing long trousers. Also some have scratches on their arms too. Boots that support ankles is also advised.

This is a relatively difficult walk through rough terrain, not the mostly nice wide road we experienced at Enoggera Reservoir. I will be bringing a machete, but hope it is not needed. As the track is not used often, it can get a bit overgrown with lantana.

There are a few climbs, but nothing too onerous. The start and end is at an elevation of about 100m, and the highest we get is just under 170 m.

Do not forget your camera too.

If any want to carpool, this is the place to arrange this. I will be going from Corinda via Indooroopilly taking 1 person but have room for more.

Looking forward to the walk. See you all on Saturday.

    Cheers
    Don

I am going to try and make it to this though I don't know my schedule for next weekend yet (internship and aupair-wise). I will be driving out from Ferny Grove if anyone needs a ride still, and I have space for 3 people.

Hi Don, Looks like another beautiful place. I will need a pickup from Indooroopilly Railway Station to get there.

    April 21

    • Don

That will be easy. I will be driving past there on the way.

      April 21

    • Don

Let me know what time your train gets in Would like it to be no later than 8.30 am. It is about a 20 minute drive to the reservoir from Indooroopilly station. :)

      April 23

  • Don

Wow. We are now into double figures. :)

    April 23

  • Maggie W.

Looking forward to it. Where do we meet?

    April 21

    • Don

There is a gate (locked 6pm to 6am) at the entrance to the reservoir area with parking both inside and outside the gate. We will meet at the gate. It is a short walk from there to the dam and the start of the walking track. :) Anyone would would like a lift, please let me know. I can fit in 4 people and I am sure there are others who could help as well. Good pickup points are Indooroopilly Railway Station and Kenmore Shopping Centre. I will be coming from Corinda via Indooroopilly and Kenmore.
