Psychology for Designers / The Science behind Data Visualisation

This month, we have a UX-themed evening with guest speakers Joe Leech (@mrjoe) and Graham Odds (@g_odds). Joe is a User Experience expert and published author, whilst Graham is a designer and developer working across desktop, web and mobile, with a particular taste for data visualisation.

Joe will be talking about his recent book 'Psychology for Designers' that is a guide to creativity.

Graham will be looking at the science behind Data Visualisation and will be delving deep into the inner workings of our visual cortex.

*UPDATE* 5th December - Due to the adverse weather conditions, Graham has been unable to fly down from Edinburgh, so there will be a replacement speaker, Praminda Caleb-Solly. Praminda is a senior lecturer in user experience design at UWE and will be talking about "Realising the user-centred design process, reflections on working with older adults in developing innovative assistive technologies"

As usual, there will be beer and pizza after the two talks - we hope to see you there!

Very interesting talk on maintaining healthy lifestyle through technology and using robots to assist elderly people given by Senior Lecturer Praminda Caleb-Solly. Although it is very difficult and relatively new topic it is purely amazing how combination of artificial intelligence, computer vision and robotics can be used to improve quality of life. Also it is very interesting that both of the talks brought up role of psychology in designing human centered interfaces. It sort of brings the question if this is how Apple achieves such a large sales. Designing the user interfaces to work more on the instincts and emotions? Again excellent talks!

I am sorry to announce that Graham Odds won't be able to make it tonight since his flight from EDI has been cancelled today due to the adverse weather conditions up north. Quelle dommage! However, I will certainly find a replacement speaker so do watch this space...

Our (very last minute!) stand-in guest speaker tonight will be Praminda Caleb-Solly, Senior Lecturer in User Experience Design at UWE. He will be talking about realising the user-centred design process, based on experiences in innovative assistive technologies. Thanks for standing in at such short notice, Praminda!

    Hi all,

The Bath Ruby User Group is hosting an event called "Programming Languages That I've Been Meaning To Try but haven't Got Around To Yet" tomorrow. You don't have to be a Rubyist to attend, so I thought it might be of some interest to people here.
