Chepstow social ride (~50 miles, medium pace)

Medium paced ride to Chepstow for lunch at Coffee #1 and back to Bristol via the Portway. Stops en route to admire views/rest etc (depending on weather conditions may turn into much shorter ride/café crawl!).

Meeting for coffee @ 10:00am, setting off at 10:30am prompt. Return to Bristol by early evening with a possible trip to a cycle-friendly pub for dinner/well deserved drink :)

The Route/Suitability:

  • Large-wheeled (26" wheel+) bicycles setup for road riding. We'll stick mainly to quiet roads and cycle tracks
  • Medium pace (reasonably leisurely, to enjoy the scenery & company but good cycle fitness and a comfortable mid-distance bike required)
  • Approx 50 miles total

Essential equipment/supplies:

  • A lock
  • Spare inner tube for your wheel/tyre size, plus tools if any (eg spanners, security tool) to remove your wheel (and preferably tyre levers, pump and repair kit, although we generally have these between us)
  • Lights
  • Snacks and drinks for en-route (we'll take breaks but there are fewer refreshment outlets than on routes like the Bristol/Bath cycle path).
    • There are numerous mini-supermarkets near our meeting point if you need to stock up immediately before departure

As ever, if the weather's awful (and I'm only proposing we go if conditions are looking fine as I don't find this kind of distance much fun in the rain/wind!), we can do an alternative shorter ride/café & pub tour around Bristol instead.

General Bike Info:

I've put together the odd bit of info/advice (including correct cycle adjustment) that might be useful at: http://ref.domstips.i... (some of my own tips plus links to useful cycling related websites, suggestions for additions always welcome...).

    Hi all,
likewise I will have to duck out as well - having trouble with the old gnashers and an appointment in the morning with the dentist which is unfortunate as I was looking forward to Chepstow. Anway, have a good safe ride and hopefully will meet up on the next ride in the New Year.

Hi all, I'm really sorry but not going to be able to make it after all- too much work to do (boo). Hopefully I'll be out again soon though. Have a great time

Hi All, some info about who should be ok on this ride for those booked on/thinking of joining us in response to some queries - hopefully this answers everything, but please do feel free to message me if not... If you're not on a racer or hybrid style bike (or possibly MTB fitted with road tyres), this ride's probably not for you. We'll be looking to average a reasonably leisurely 10mph, so including stops are aiming for 2.5 to 3 hours ride time in EACH direction barring any unforeseen problems.

The route/pace will quite likely expedite the onset of any lurking bike problems so best to have your cycle checked by a bike mechanic if you have any doubts and hopefully avoid on-route breakdown.

So basically if you're reasonably fit and on a well-maintained road bike you should be good for this ride - I look forward to seeing everyone and am keeping fingers crossed for the weather :)

If you're not joining us it would, as ever, be lovely to see you for coffee before we set off :)

I'm figuring that there can't be much more rain left to fall this year, so the chances of getting to Chepstow in winter will be about as good as they were in the summer! Coffee #1 does very nice cakes and Welsh cakes to energise us for the way back :)
