England v Italy (kick-off 6:00pm, this Saturday)

Hello Everyone,

After much debate and consideration let's all meet at the Firkin on Yonge at 5:15pm, Saturday!

Kick-off is 6:00pm so that will give us enough time for introductions, drinks, etc.  Everyone is welcome... Brits of all persuasions, Canadians, Colonials, Foreigners and, yes, even Italians!

As we mentioned earlier in the week, this isn't a formal meetup.  Very, very informal.  No fees, no hosting, no reservations.  Just a bunch of English people meeting up so that we can collectively cry into our beer together.  Or not, hopefully.

You will also see that some people have already made plans to watch the game at a different location (Rose in the Beaches, Matt at the Pipers, etc.) so please reach out to them directly if those locations suit you better.

So, how will we recognise each other at 'Firkin on Yonge'?  I will be wearing a traditional English straw Cowboy hat (with a '1966' label) and I will try to stand in a conspicuous spot. Anyone else wearing a Cowboy hat will get a free drink.

Don't be shy!  Just look for the hat and just to be sure it's me, you can always ask/shout the secret phrase "Do they think it's all over?" and I will reply "It is now!".

Don't hesitate to text me on[masked] or email [masked]

See y'all soon and c'mon England!!

Steve"

I am sorry I didn't get to meet up with you guys. Sad result, but yes, we are used to it!

    June 15

  • Steve

Thanks to everyone we met and apologies to those we didn't! Pity about the result but I'm sure my fellow 1966ers are used to it by now :-(

    June 15

Hi guys; Does this pub have a large screen!

    June 14

    • Steve

      Hans, yes!

    • Hans B.

Great, then see all you lovely people there

      June 14

  • Steve

Raymond, Barbara - as it's an England game, I'm assuming everyone will be wearing a flat cap or a bowler hat and so my cowboy hat will be easily recognisable ;-)

Anyone who is in the East end and wants to meet at Kelsey's on Harmony and Taunton, I'll be there from around 17:00

    June 14

  • Barbara

I can't make it that far, son has injured himself. Going to 'The Roy' on Queen East. It's an Irish Pub but will have to do :) Come on England.

    June 14

  • Raymond G.

Cowboy hats? What are we, Americans? C'Mon England!

At Williams landing - good English crowd turning up!! Great patio

      June 14

    • Barbara

I was thinking the same thing Raymond. Should be flat caps - ha!

    Don't forget, people.... Cowboy hats!!

    June 14

  • Mark S.

So - has a decision been made - Duke of York or Firkin on Yonge?

Suggest we plump for one so people can make plans?

    June 13

    • Steve

Hi Mark. Plumped for the Firkin in the end. Can you make it?

      June 14

    • Mark S.

There's 50 of going to Quinns straight after the rugby from 5 pm

      June 14

  • Sue T.

which is the nearest TTC station?

    June 14

    • Steve

Hi Sue. Queen on Yonge. The Firkin is on Yonge St., just over the road from the Eaton Centre.

      June 14

  • Rose K.

I'm going to The Salty Dog on Queen E., in the Beach!

    June 13

    • Barbara

I might try and get there too Rose. I am on Queen East near Jimmy Simpson Rec Centre. Come on England!

      1 · June 13

    • Rose K.

Yes - I want to be able to walk home for this one! It's just a streetcar ride away from where you are Barbara, very convenient :)

      June 13

  • Steve

Terry Butcher has been sacked as manager of Hibernian FC - this means he'll be free for the vacant England manager job in three weeks time :-)

    June 13

  • Denis N.

One of our members mentioned Williams Landing in Liberty Village. Looked it up and they have a huge patio...should be a vibrant atmosphere.

    June 13

  • Sondra H.

Not the Q & B...weird food and crowded, uncomfortable seating. I'm not familiar with the screen at D of Y but Firkin is okay.

I would love to attend my first event with the group, but I think it will be impossible to find a pub for a group. I'm not sure where I'll be watching, but I think I will go out a couple of hours before kick off and find a pub to squeeze into.
I look forward to meeting with you soon, perhaps the Uruguay match or Costa Rica
    Cheers and COM'ON ENGLAND!!!!

  • Gary Newbury- Last Mile E.

What Bell channel will it be televised on? (and don't say channel 9, if you are of a certain age!!)

    June 13

  • Caroline

    Loose Moose on Front?

    June 12

    • Caroline

I just called + they will be showing the match, the hostess said it would be super busy + they wouldn't take reservations.

      June 13

    • Steve

Caroline, many thanks for the suggestion. We're getting close to having to decide and the Duke of York or the Firkin/Yonge seem to be the best options for location. And we're guaranteed three games in the group stages..... can't predict further than that!

      1 · June 13

  • Megan

Hi everyone! Darren and I both vote the Duke of York. Good atmosphere and killer Yorkshire puds. :)

    June 13

  • Matt B.

I'd be happy to join, and will definitely be in Pipers for the Uruguay game on the 19th. All England fans, $10 to get in I think, with a pint and chance to win a shirt, WOOOH.

    June 11

    • Mark S.

      $10 - why pay?

      June 11

    • Matt B.

$10 includes a pint. I just thought I'd check it out. Queen & Beaver is $15 for a cider!

    Thursday evening update:

    1) Jonathan's suggestion of the Firkin on Yonge has been added to the map:
    https://mapsengine.google.com/ma...

    2) If we discount the bars which are out to the north, west and east, as well as the Queen, we're left with the Firkin or the Duke of York as the easiest for TTC and/or GO.. 3) My vote goes to the Firkin. Your opinion is requested! Let the debate begin.

    4) I'll post another update tomorrow night (Friday) with the final decision on the location, based upon your responses.

The England team visited an orphanage in Brazil today. "It's heartbreaking to see their sad little faces, with no hope" said Jose, age 6

  • Steve

Jonathan, many thanks for the opportunity to organise this.

    June 11

    • Jonathon S.

No problem, the Firkin on Yonge 207 Yonge St (easy to get to and good sports atmosphere) may be a good spot, Big Screen on a 2 Storey Gallery so lots of viewing room, I spoke to them and they are showing the England game and suggested arriving from 5pm, they are not taking reservations and have beer specials on as well.

      June 12

    • Jonathon S.

Easy to get to for Non-downtowners i.e. those coming in on GO Transit or at Union Station

      June 12

  • Steve

OK, here's the Weds evening sit-rep:

    1) This isn't an official meetup, per se. No host. No fees. No bookings. We're just going to meet at the agreed venue where, hopefully, it will be standing room only.

    2) The intent is NOT to have a pleasant evening conversing with charming friends. It will be meat, bread and beer with a side of multiple insults directed at the TV. Salads will not be permitted.

    3) Non-footballing spouses are very welcome. There will a be a knitting and crochet class at the back of the bar.

    4) This link should show the suggested venues and youur feedback/vote is requested:
    https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zM20pblPTscQ.kVILPxdWgI2o

    5) The Queen and Beaver seems to be the most centrally located option, close to TTC subway but does anyone know the likely atmosphere? Large or small?

    6) I created the event but I can't figure out how to edit the description and location. Hopefully Jonathan will come to the rescue when the venue is confirmed.

Update: it seems the little lady wasn't too impressed with points 2) and 3) above. Salads will be permitted and there won't be any knitting classes. And I've cancelled the strippers.

  • Mark S.

    Duke of Somerset ;)

    June 11

    • Steve

Convenient location but isn't it a bit laid back?

      June 11

  • Mark S.

I can tell you now that you will not get into the Queen and Beaver unless you get there for when it opens.

    What about http://www.operabobspublichouse.com

Easy for street car - short walk from subway (500m) - home of Man City Footballers Supporters club :)

    June 11

  • Alex

Can you host at Scallywag ?
    Thanks

    Here's good list:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/06/10/where-to-watch-world-cup-toronto_n_5455005.html

For England I would suggest then:

    Duke of York
    Scallywags
    Opera Bob's Public House
    Queen and Beaver
    The Feathers
    The Dizzy

    • Joe

      Can Scottish people come?

      June 11

    • Steve

Of course. As long as you promise not to gloat if we get stuffed by the Italians!

      June 11

  • Sondra H.

Fox and Fiddle on Yonge just north of St. Clair is The Arsenal pub. Scallywags, just around the corner from there is the home for the Liverpool crowd. Both are nice and central for everyone.

    June 11

  • Barbara

There is 'The Roy' on Queen East. Has a few screens and serves a good guinness. They are doing a mean Yorkshire filled with beef tonight :)

    June 11

  • Fiona

Pipers pub at st Clair and Arlington is official England House. May be sold out for England game but call and find out 647 748. 6800

    June 11

  • Mark S.

I was thinking one of the Dukes? Does anyone know a Duke with a big screen?
