The Catskill 500

KSU 7:20am

THIS IS THE LOOP WE WILL BE DOING

(A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%.)

The ride date is tentative, it may change as we get closer to the ride...

This is a long ride... 500 Miles, so be prepared to be up early. We will be riding up via I87 to Exit 20, Saugerties New York. There we will fill up at Stewarts, grab a quick snack. We will take State Road 23A (SR-23A) west past Katterskill Falls to get to the start point near the junction of SR-23A and SR-214. SR-214 has nice sweepers through a deep mountain pass. Ride through Phoenicia and Woodstock and sample the crazy switchbacks on Ohayo Mountain Road (SR-41.) then onto State route 28A, which is twisty and scenic road along the Ashokan Reservoir. SR-42 (Peekamoose Road/ Watson Hollow Road) has some nice twists and runs past Peekamoose Mountain through some great forest. SR-47 runs for 21 miles through the heart of the Catskills from Route 19 in Claryville, NY to Route 28 in Big Indian, NY. This road has great twists with nice elevation changes and awesome scenery. There are very few driveways or cross streets! A river runs along the road and there are 4000 foot plus mountains on both sides of the road. SR-30 is a technical twistie that runs along the south side of the Pepacton Reservoir. This is a very fun ride.

THIS IS THE LOOP WE WILL BE DOING

Lunch will be at Brio's Pizzeria & Restaurant,  you can check out the lunch Menu.

Nate, if you're cruising at 120 with other groups, you should upgrade to a 1000. When the lights come on from Five Oh, that's when the race begins. Hard to outrun on a 300. ;)

Thanks for giving me the opportunity for making this ride happen. It's was really cool connecting with the new riders. I commute on my bike everyday, but longer rides is what riding is all about. I was not aware of the issue today until I got home and read the post. I don't even know how to respond. Great ride. Got home @ 7:20pm. Thanks again to Denis for putting this all together and for the lead. Two riders didn't show up just for the record. Ochelyn and Bryan. Although we did have an unexpected visitor who joined us in Yonkers. Mark, nice meeting and riding with you. @ Denis. National Weather Service says 20% chance of precip for Saturday in NYC and Catskills. That's fine by me. Bring rain gear for those spotty areas in the mountains just in case where we might get a spinkle or two. I'm fine with location meetup. I'll find it. As you can see not everyone has reponded. This happenes all the time. Heck, come event time maybe only a handful will show up. So let's just be done with it and get this on the books for Saturday. You need to change the date at the top. Let's do it before I might sprain or break an ankle or something...lol.

40% chance if rain Saturday and Sunday,,what you guys want to do? If most want to go Saturday we will ride or reschedule for the following Saturday????

    July 24, 2014

    • nate

Instead of riding to a location where it might rain, won't you guys change the location to where it is not going to rain. It is evident some are not comfortable riding in the riding especially in the roads that some calm to be only for the experience. Such roads consist of uphill/downhill twisties, rocks/gravel on the roads, etc. Lets change the location to where everyone is comfortable instead of doing the majority rule thing.

      July 24, 2014

    • Denis

If the roads will be bad, I will take us on safer roads. Weather is crap everywhere

I'm assuming this is an experienced riders group with no beginners. Don't get me wrong I'm no expert but certainly would describe myself as advanced. 15 riders is a big group so stopping intermittently for slow riders to catch up will put a damper on things. Not to mention adding additional unnecessary time.

This is a long all day ride, 500 miles round trip. So if there are inexperienced riders here I'd like to know so that I can plan accordingly. Thanks.

Since I don't have my bike yet, I would still love to participate in some of the group's events as a rider until I have my own bike so that I can meet other bikers and to get tips on riding safe, how to do simple repairs myself, and what to look for when buying my first bike. However, I can't find the forum that I think is the most appropriate place to do this. I'm open to suggestions on how I can meet safe people I can ride with, or ways I can participate, volunteer at events, etc in order to meet people. Not nec. seeking dates/ hookups, just cool people to learn from who are serious bikers.
Thank you so much, and thanks a lot for your service in providing the group.
ps I've been told I'm a damn good cook, so lunch would be one way I contribute if I'm able to tag along sometime.
