Dear Brooklyn Writers Guild,
I am writing to inquire whether you might be interested in attending, volunteering at, or donating old books to a book-themed event at our museum during the afternoon of May 19, 2012. To give you some background information, the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum is the oldest house in New York City as well as the citys first landmark. Boekdag, Dutch for Book Day, is an annual event at our museum that features authors for all ages, storytelling, and book making craft activities. This year we will also have a book swap, where participants who bring a book can freely exchange it for another. The impetus for this occasion is to highlight Brooklyn-based authors while also making donated books freely available to members of the community (book swap) and empowering participants to recognize, record, and illustrate their own stories in books of their own creation. As the last remaining Dutch farmhouse in all five boroughs, we are reminded that the 17th Century Dutch in addition to being accomplished artists and craftspeople sustained the most literate society in the world and that women in particular enjoyed a level of literacy unheard of anywhere else. As libraries in this area of Brooklyn threaten to restrict public hours and Brooklyn Public Librarys Bookmobile and Kidzmobile are no longer available for weekend events, we feel it is especially important to continue the Dutch tradition of literacy and art for all at NYC's last remaining Dutch farmhouse. I hope youll consider joining us in making this year our most successful Boekdag yet.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or require additional information.
Yours sincerely,
Joshua Van Kirk
