GR57 - day hike, 27km - Barvaux/Hamoir

Logical continuation of the past GR activity: the next stage of the GR57. The trail follows the Ourthe valley, starting from the village of Barvaux. The first part will be mostly in the country side, joining the village of Durbuy and then Bomal. After Bomal, the trail will be mostly in forests and in "rocky" areas (the Belgian way: some significant rocks lost among trees), sometimes in the bottom of the valley, sometimes in the top of it. The final destination is the station of the village of Hamoir.

The guide for those who are interested: (it will be done in the other direction)

Some facts

Difficulty: upper intermediate

Distance: 27km

Walking time: 7 hours

Total ascent: 760m

Total descent: 820m

Kind of surfaces: unsurfaced, earth/mud, asphalt

Landscapes: forests, countryside, rocky areas

Waterproof hiking shoes are necessary, and the necessary drinks, food and appropriate clothing to hold the day. A headlamp is recommended, but optional.

- one return train ticket to Barvaux (a RailPass is a better deal — if you use the train often)

Meetup at 8:40 at the Bruxelles-Luxembourg station. Arrival in Brussels around 21h00.

The now classical stats: distance 26.9km, walking time: 6h07, average speed 4.4 km/h (pauses included), total ascent: 751m, total descent: 839m. It was actually one the fastest walks I had with the group, which is quite an achievement because it was among the most difficult ones from a slope point of view (the others where this average was reached ones had much softer slopes, even if the elevation numbers were comparable). Congratulations to all of you then!

Hi guys, the forecast looks rainy, is the hike still happening even if it's bad weather?

I'm feeling sick. So I don't think that I will able to participate in the hiking tomorrow. I hope someone can take my place

Really sorry to cancel, because it looked like a nice hike, but I have to go on a last minute trip for work, already leaving on Sunday... Enjoy & hopefully until next time!

Hi, I was wondering what "being on the waitlist" means? Can you only attend when not on the waitlist?

    February 25, 2014

    • Renaud

For some reasons I prefer to limit the numbers of participants. "Being on the waiting list" means that you have to wait that a spot becomes free to join the activity, and when it will become free, you'll be notified by mail (it's automatic).

Oh ok! It is good to know. I am really new in here... I would have just come. :) :( So then lets hope for the best! :)

Hi, I had to withdraw unfortunately (knee injury that doesn't seem to improve). So the spot is for the next one on the waiting list. Have fun!

I had to decline right away, I will be walking the hills of my home country the coming weekend. :) You guys enjoy and see you soon!
