Essex Steam Train-Gillette Castle Hike

  • Jun 2, 2012 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

For outdoor enthusiasts! The Essex Steam Train and Riverboat offers a unique hiking experience to Gillette Castle, home of the late William Gillette, famous for his stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

Please read the itinerary below before signing up. This about a 5 hour event. You will need to be able to do the hike if you want to see the Castle.

Gillette Castle Connection hikers enjoy a 30-minute train ride through the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Then passengers detrain at the Ferry Road flagstop for a short hike to the Chester/Hadlyme Ferry. The Ferry transports hikers to the base of Gillette Castle State Park, in Hadlyme, for a hike up a hill of moderately graded trails to one of Connecticut's most famous destinations. The entire trip (train ride / hike to ferry / ferry ride / hike up hill to castle) takes about an hour each way. Total hiking distance is approximately 3/8 mile each way, or 3/4 mile roundtrip.

This hiking adventure is recommended for those in good health, with average hiking skills, and appropriate footwear/clothing. It is not suitable for families with small children or strollers due to the hiking terrain.

Chester / Hadlyme Ferry runs as required. On the return trip, hikers must allow for possible waiting time for the Ferry. The train does not stop at the Ferry Road flagstop, unless hikers are there at the scheduled pickup time.

Itinerary:

Meet at Essex Station at 10:30am

Train Departs Essex Station at  11:00am

De-Train / Chester at 11:30am

State Ferry & Park Hike is approximately 40 minutes

Arrive Gillette Castle at 12:10am

Train & Boat Departs Castle at 1:45pm

Hike & Ferry approximately 40 minutes

Board Train / Chester at 2:25pm

Board Boat at 2:40pm

Board Train / Deep River at 4:00pm

Arrive at Essex Station at 4:35pm

I would suggest bringing a packed lunch and/or snacks and water for the trip to keep hydrated.

This is a 5 hour event! PLEASE make sure before signing up that you can do the 40 minute hike to the Castle and then another 40 minute hike back.

The weather was lousy, the ferry didn't run, but we all had FUN. The train, boat rides and castle tour were great and the company even better.

Don't let a few rain drops put you off! This trip was well worth it, steam train fascinating, Gillette castle intriguing, and the people I met a bunch of fun explorers! While the waters were too high for the ferry, we did get the boat ride. Great day! Good to meet you.

I'm going to wear 'disposable' clothes, and bring a change with me. I don't know about facilities, but I'm also not that bashful ;) Also don't forget to bring plenty of water (or a rain catcher) and snacks/lunch.

Thank you, Mindy. That was what I needed to know. Didn't want to drive all the way there for a cancellation. I will wear my rain gear and a smile on my face!

The venue doesn't cancel for weather and neither will we. It's a rain or shine event. We have fun no matter what the weather. It will be an adventure!

The new weather forecast for Saturday as of this (Friday) morning is heavy rain and thunderstorms all day. Might this event be cancelled? How will we know?

Hi Amy. I'm not sure. Karen or Neva might know better. I'm probably just going to wear my sneaks that have good tred

    Hi, two questions.
    1) any room for one more?
    2) any car pool from nyc area?
    Thanks!

(essentially i will have to be at work by or before 7 am that day, in order to get out with enough time to make it to the train. This precludes any internet checking on Saturday. So... if changes, make them the night before, okay?)

If the weather is bad, what are the plans? PS if things are cancelled or changed on Saturday, I will have NO way of knowing in advance.

Hi Kevin! Keep your eye on the site. Sometimes people do change their mind and if they change their RSVP to a no the spot just opens up on the site. So it's first come first serve.

I would be also. In fact, I sent a message about the possibility of upping the number of attendees. Couldn't we get another 20?
