I've been interested in meditation for years but never had a chance to practice it. Well, one needs to make time for good things of life! There are good scientific data to support various benefits-not to mention what Markand so elegantly says.
Mediation gives self-awareness and peace, helps to control negative thoughts (anger, resentment, controlling others, avarice, pessimism, dissatisfaction with life, etc.), and to cultivate love for ourselves and all around us. Based on medical evidence, it helps stress, depression, chronic pain, and even contributes to better management of a number of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and epilepsy. It actually increases synaptic connections in the brain, improving cognition (thus delaying Alzheimer's disease). The ancient practice is proven to be highly beneficial at multiple levels using modern scientific techniques (functional MRI, serum endorphin, serotonin, brain EEG, etc.). But one needs to practice it regularly and over a long period of time to see benefits. -- MB
