As part of our Community Night activities, each Wednesday at 7pm to 9 pm , we will have a non-sectarian silent meditation for 20 minutes followed by a discussion and/or a documentary biographical film about someone who has made a great contribution to non-violence, such as Joan Baez, Gandhi, Ang San Su Kyi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. etc. or other enlightening films that deal with peace and socially engaged spirituality, not just by Buddhists.
The format for Community Night is that there will be several activities going on at the same time. So after meditation you can chose to have a discussion, socialize, do some art, or watch a film. We plan to have a one hour film starting at 8 pm.
For discussions, these will be moderated by a BPF volunteer and should be oriented towards discussing social issues or spirituality in its own terms, for a general audience. The intent of anyone participating should be open and honest discussion, not recruitment or proselytizing. Anyone may participate, including monastics, but everyone should be regarded as equal. This is different from a Dharma talk.
If you would like to moderate a discussion as part of our BPF discussion activity or teach something on a non-sectarian basis please contact Tom ahead of time at[masked]-5748. We are looking for volunteers to do this.
If you want to have a specific class on an advanced topic for your own group, we do have extra classrooms available for this purpose for a suitable donation to the Chinese Community Center (please discuss with Tom[masked]-5748.)
November 3rd will be the first night and Tom will be there to organize things. He will be organizing many things, including his painting class, so please be patient if not everything goes smoothly. Do not be disappointed if not so many people show up yet. This will take time. It only takes one person to meditate and we will show a film at least even if not enough come for a good discussion.
Please note that the meditation will start promptly at 7pm, even if there is only one person. It will be in the main hall. Please tell Tom which activities you would like to participate in when you arrive.

Also, if you would like to organize other BPF activities in other locations, such as Tampa, please contact Tom[masked]-5748. We are having Community Night at the Chinese Community Center primarily because our main organizer (Tom) has very limited time and can only do one night a week, and he runs this center. The starting point for any activity as a matter of practice is who is going to organize it, including the various resources necessary to make it go off smoothly. We also want something to go on on a continuing basis. We may have special events some weeks, such as the kind of panel discussion we have at Change Your Mind Day (which we will have this Spring in the same park as last year). None of our activities preclude others we could organize that people have the time and energy to do.
