Snowshoe at Chestnut Ridge

Hey guys,

I called Griffis Sculpture Park.  Unfortunately, with such a large group size, we will not be able to go there.  I underestimated how many people would respond to the event.

So instead we should meet up at Chestnut Ridge and showshoe around the park.  I will be inside the Casino with snowshoes in hand.  This hike will have some hills but they will not be too difficult.  Bring snowshoes, poles, water, food, etc.

I would recommend that you wear a synthetic baselayer that will wick moisture.  Do not wear too many layers because you can easily get too hot.

Hey, I know some of you rented some snowshoes for this event. I am a member of an online gear discounter call The Clymb. Currently they have some Easton snow shoes at discount prices. They also have all sorts of camping, hiking, outdoorsy gear and apparel. Let me know if you would like an invite by posting your e-mail.

As usual, the friendliest nicest crowd one could ask for! We did some venturing trying out the snowshoes by going up and down the hills...that was my favorite part: thanks for organizing it Ryan:-)

Hey guys, to get to the Casino, you drive on 277 heading away from the town of Orchard Park. Drive past Powers road (blinking red light intersection) and past Newton on your right. Past Newton you will see the entrance to Chestnut Ridge which will drive up to an overpass. If you drive under the overpass, you need missed your exit. When you drive up to the overpass head left and you will drive over Chestnut Ridge Road. Continue forward until you see a large building on your left. This is the Casino. Head in, look for people with snowshoes. If you have any problems please call [masked].

We could encounter deep snow in certain areas and to be in boots would pose a disadvantage as opposed to being on webbed snowshoes, it would slow you down and the group as well

    January 2, 2013

    • Q

Ok, good to know, thanks !

      January 3, 2013

  • Q

can you attend even if you don't have snow shoes, just a good pair of boots?

    January 2, 2013

    • rebecca

    Hi Ryan:
Thanks for organizing and putting it together. Total membership of BOMnow is 1,707 so statistically and easy without restrictions venue will get a lot of attendees. One suggestion for future events, put a limit to the # people who can attend, talk to Carl/Larry about how to do that :-). Again, thanks for your efforts.

Snowshoes are available at local sporting goods stores: Dick's, EMS( buy/rent), GearForAdventure(buy/rent), Buffalo Sports(gently used goods, across from McKinley Mall), Evergreen Outfitters(Tubbs, buy or rent-$10-12 per day), or try Sams Club, BJs Wholesale Club, buy online; Amazon.com,Northern Lights, Craigslist....hope this helps!

    January 2, 2013

  • Carl L.

Vinny, Sometimes BOMrs cannot go far for this type of adventure. Israel and Soar are great places to explore. Why don't you organize a meetup for one of these venues?

    January 2, 2013

  • Kate P

So, where does one purchase/rent/acquire showshoes?

    January 1, 2013

    • Carl L.

Kate, If you are from the northtowns you can rent snow shoes at Eastern Mountain Sports located on Niagara Falls Blvd near the 290.

I'm not sure which part of the park you intend to snowshoe, but there are some big hills there.

    January 1, 2013

    • Ryan G.

There are some, but we will be avoiding them.

      January 2, 2013

  • Jo Ann B.

I would like to carpool. My car is not great in the snow.

    January 2, 2013

  • Larry T.

More importantly, where will we eat afterwards?

    January 1, 2013

  • Michael C.

If we do this hike, there is one very steep hill that is climbed to reach the Castle sculpture. It is worth it though for the view.

    January 1, 2013

  • Rachel B

I would like to go but per the website the sculpture park isn't open in the winter (only May 1-Oct 31). I've never been there but would hate to drive all the way to see it not available. Anyone know for sure that we can get in?

    December 31, 2012

    • rebecca

Rachel, I am currently awaiting permission. Great place for people and Dogs! We should be preparred (should they give us permission) to donate at least $5.00 per person & or doggies. Will keep you posted...

      December 31, 2012

  • Ryan G.

I have snowshoed here before. We could also change the location to Tifft Nature Preserve.

    December 31, 2012

    • rebecca

I just emailed Griffis's so wait before changing it...

      December 31, 2012

  • rebecca

the griffis family is pretty open to visitors.
i think if we all give like a $5.oo donation they would be cool with that.
i can ask Lisa if we need to...

    December 31, 2012

  • Larry T.

Maybe do Hunters or the Forest again

    December 31, 2012

  • Carl L.

    Ryan,
Maybe you can call Amelia Griffis at [masked] to find out if we can shoe' there. I know that Griffis Park has had sanctioned snow shoe tours there in the past however, we do not want to break any rules.

    December 31, 2012

  • Ryan G.

I have snowshoespd here several times.

    December 31, 2012

  • Ryan Greer changed the time from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

    December 31, 2012

  • Ryan G.

Ok, I will get all this info up later today.
