Mid Summer Night's Adventure: Fossils/Astronomy

Penn Dixie in Hamburg is having an event featuring fossils and astronomy.

We can dig for 380 million year old tropical marine fossils by lantern light.  Also, they are setting up telescopes so we can be astronomers.   I'm more excited about the telescopes then the digging but we can do both.

Time:

630pm - Dinner at Uncle Joe's Diner, 4869 Southwestern Blvd, Hamburg, NY.

8pm -  Meet at Penn Dixie for evening astronomy program. We will be meet near the cashier station.

$7

I'll be in my blue Nike hat.

That was really cool. Darn full moon caused us some difficulty seeing the stars but we survived. And they showed us the moon through the telescope. Marie and Mike get the best earth scientists award. Lynne, glad you found us after all!

Tonight is our fossil/astronomy night. If you can't make it please change your RSVP.

If you want to have dinner, let's meet at 6:30 at Uncle Joe's Diner - 4869 Southwestern Blvd, Hamburg, NY 14075. We will then drive 5 minutes to the Penn Dixie Site.

Let's plan on meeting at Penn Dixie at 8pm near the cashier. I'll be wearing my blue Nike hat and we'll put in some comments about where we are after arrival. If we're a little bit late due to dinner don't worry we'll be there! It's $7 admission. They also allow kids but hopefully we don't feel like we're at summer camp! If you bring a flashlight or lantern you can dig for fossils in the dark! Also, bring a small digging tool and a bag/pail to store your treasures. Beginning at 8pm, there will be will some volunteers setup with telescopes and we can look up into space, etc.

Penn Dixie appears to be a little tricky to find. They recommend putting the intersection of Bristol Rd & Big Tree Rd, Blasdell, NY 14219 into your GPS. Try Hamburg for the city if you can't find Blasdell in your GPS. Detailed driving directions are at http://www.penndixie.org/map/map.html. I pasted in some hints below from their website.
From the NYS Thruway: Take Exit 56, the Blasdell exit; after the toll booth, turn right on to Rt. 179 (Milestrip Rd); at the first traffic light turn left on to South Park Avenue (Rt. 62); proceed south on South Park Avenue for 1.2 miles to the intersection of Big Tree Road (traffic light); turn right on to Big Tree Road; cross a single railroad track; at the first road on the right, Bristol; turn right on to Bristol Road; proceed to the end of Bristol; turn left on to North Street; the Penn Dixie Site entrance is directly ahead.

When can we dig fossils? We would do better in the daylight. Yes dinner is a good idea.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
