Syracuse Zoo & Destiny USA Mall via Amtrak

  • Let's take a "new in town" day trip to Syracuse to visit the Syracuse Zoo and  Destiny USA Mall (formerly known as Carousel Center).  Of course we COULD drive there, but let's ride the "rails" (Amtrak) so we can relax during the ride.

They have convenient trains which leave from downtown Buffalo and Depew and you get dropped off 5-10 minutes walk from the mall. Travel time is about 2.5 hours each direction.

I know it's a little pricey but bring your lunch to work for the week and you'll have enough money for a ticket.

We'll first take the Amtrak train to Syracuse and then take a city bus to the Zoo.  I've been to this zoo before and thought it was great.    After the zoo adventure, we'll take the bus back to the Destiny USA Mall and shop.  Finally, we'll take a short walk back to the Syracuse station where we'll board the train to Buffalo.

Approx $50-$60 round trip for the train ride.  You'll also have to pay for your admission to the zoo and for meals.

    update: 10/8/14:

Hi. I bought my train ticket to the Syracuse Zoo so if you're still interested in coming, I recommend purchasing yours now.  You can call 800-USA-RAIL to buy your ticket or you can buy on their website.

    Here's the times to buy:

Saturday October 18th: Train # 284  Buffalo Depew to Syracuse. Leaves Buffalo at 7:41am

Saturday October 18th: Train #281 Syracuse to Buffalo Depew. Leaves Syracuse at 3:40pm

The train ride is about 2.5 hours each direction.  Drinks and snacks are available on the train.

The ticket prices can change but the cheapest I see is around $60 at this point.  If you want to get the price down to appoximately to $48, you can try:

and use a link on that website to goto Amtrak and then you will get a 15% discount.  It's a little tricky to get this discount so let me know if you need help.

We have to take a couple of short bus rides to get to the zoo so we're probably not going to have very much time for the mall.  Of course you could just stay at the mall and skip the zoo.

If you can't make it, please update your RSVP.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi crew. I was thinking we would leave buffalo at 740 am and get back to buffalo at 6pm. How does that sound. Do you still want to go?

Hi, I was wondering what train you would be taking to Syracuse and when it would leave?
