The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

The next book on my list is The Hobbit so I can fit it in before the movie. I don't think I need to do too much of an intro here, but I will steal Amazon's description just in case you have been living under a rock ;)

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

The hobbit-hole in question belongs to one Bilbo Baggins, an upstanding member of a "little people, about half our height, and smaller than the bearded dwarves." He is, like most of his kind, well off, well fed, and best pleased when sitting by his own fire with a pipe, a glass of good beer, and a meal to look forward to. Certainly this particular hobbit is the last person one would expect to see set off on a hazardous journey; indeed, when Gandalf the Grey stops by one morning, "looking for someone to share in an adventure," Baggins fervently wishes the wizard elsewhere. No such luck, however; soon 13 fortune-seeking dwarves have arrived on the hobbit's doorstep in search of a burglar, and before he can even grab his hat or an umbrella, Bilbo Baggins is swept out his door and into a dangerous adventure.

Rough page count: 320
(but it's a kids book so it should be a relatively easy read if you have not read it like me)

And what better place to discuss the book than Piper's Pub where you can find a warm Irish meal and some good beer.

Great discussion about Gollum and Hobbit culture towards the end of the evening.

Our names are in. We just need to wait for one booth to clear out. If people would prefer to get seated quicker though once everyone gets here we can decide whether to wait or go somewhere less crowded.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up... Piper's Pub does not take reservations but they said they are typically not busy on Wednesdays. They did add to their books that they may be expecting a big party. I will aim to get there before 7 to scout it out and hopefully get some seats. In the odd chance that they are really busy we should not have that hard of a time finding a nearby restaurant to migrate to.

The goal is to have read the full book for the meetup but occasionally people don't finish in time and that's ok too. Meetups are posted usually at least a month in advance to give people enough time to read.

This happens to be my current "before-bed" book. I just got one of the color-illustrated editions from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0618968636/ref=oh_details_o00_s03_i03
