Our book club began in July, 2003. although it was not listed on "Meetup" until 2008. We now havewell over 150 book shared. Meetings are filled with lively conversation and fun related to book themes. Meetings tie in food and/or an activity. We are actually also "foodies" who enjoy new friendships and adventures.
We began as co-ed but over time that changed and we are now for LADIES ONLY.
We usually meet on the far northwest side of Chicago (near Devon & Central in the neighborhood of Edgebrook). Public transportation is excellent. Members are all ages and stages of life, from college to retirement. We are also on facebook as a private group - although I do not keep that site updated as well.
Many meetings are on Friday evenings (7-9PM) but several meetings a year are at a different days of the week and different times. We do some planned outings ex: going to "high Tea". to a play or concert, to a restaurant, to a movie, yo a museum or historic site, and so on.
On the blue banner to the left:
-check out "FILES" for help with directions ( e-mail Judy for more help on this!)
-check out "ABOUT US" for a list of the books read to date (I try to keep that updated)
I do not charge membership dues, although Meetup charges ME almost $15 / month to have this group listed on Meetup. Yes, that is correct, I pay Meetup about $175 /year in fees out of my own pocket just to have the convenient of keeping our calendar and posts on Meetup.
I do ask that members contribute time & talent by reading, by coming to meetings if they RSVP "yes", by discussing respectfully, and by bringing snacks. Members pay their own share when we go to a restaurant or outside event.
Meetup does provide the ability for members to "chip in" voluntarily to help me pay support the almost $175.00 /year. However, in my experience most do not contribute. In fact, in the almost 8 years I have listed this book club on Meetup, members have "chipped in" a total of less than $60.
Our ladies span the gamut in age and in stage of life. We have college & grad students, professionals (including teachers, lawyers, doctors, realtors, therapists, and more), stay-at home moms and retirees. This makes for rich discussions.
Books are voted in by members many months ahead of a meeting because we are all "busy bees". This allows us to budget our time & money.
All are encouraged to bring good, used books to swap at meetings.
Meet kindred book lovers. You'll read a new book every month. Often it will be a book you would not have picked up on your own. Schedule some "me" time and join us! Discuss, laugh, share stories, relax, and make new friends!
