Protest date: Saturday, July 7th at 12 pm. Meeting place: just outside of the Second Cup coffee shop next door. I told the owner that I had done some research about the dolls she was selling and that there were opposing viewpoints in the world of academia in regards to the cultural significance of these Gollywog dolls that were essentially caricatures (grotesque ones) of Black people. She cut me off and said that she had gotten no complaints and that everyone knew what the dolls were. I replied that the dolls were racist and tried to explain why. She cut me off again and said "Listen, we know and we don't care" so at that point I became upset and said to her "you don't care if they're racist?!" She then told me to get out of the shop. I got kicked out of her store for confronting her about her racist dolls. Please let me know if you can make it. Thanks! [masked]
I would like to invite you to join me at the protest against the sale of racist memorabilia at the Jolly Goods Candy Stop in Mackenzie Towne in South Calgary.
