Hike the McKenzie River Trail via the LTD Bus

A scenic 8.2 mile hike round trip from the Ranger Station to Belknap Hot Springs Resort.  The hot pools at the resort rent for $7 for one hour, and the scenic bus ride is just $3 round trip.  Great way to relax midway through a beautiful hike.

Meet at the Library, which is right next to the LTD Station.  You can park in the parking garages on Saturdays for free.  The bus will leave at 8:30AM, so be on time.  The bus will drop us off at the Ranger Station up the McKenzie at 9:48AM.  We will then hike to Belknap Hot Springs Resort.  It took us about two hours last time, with stops along the way and pictures.  Belknap Hot Springs Resort has restrooms, tables for us to sit and enjoy our lunches at, various concessions, along with showers and changing rooms.  We will then hike back to the Ranger Station in hopes of being there around 5:30PM, well ahead of the departing time of 6:03PM.  I know that is arriving a half hour before the bus arrives, but it's best to be early to get back to catch the last bus for the day.  Once back at the Ranger Station we can sit together, talk, maybe enjoy some snacks together before the bus comes at 6:03PM.

Please dress accordingly for seasonal weather conditions.  Avoid cotton and bring your 10 essentials in a day pack.  Be sure to bring a swim suit for the hot springs and a towel.  Spare merino wool socks are always good to add in to your pack.  Also warm clothes to switch into afterwards.

Great bus ride up to past Walterville. The hike back towards Eugene was great also except for the vehicles. I at least got my 5 miles in before my daughter picked me up.

I caught the bus at Thurston station. After I got on the bus and not really knowing who the other homers are I looked around and asked if there were any other hikers and someone yelled yes. So I took a seat and the person next me told me there were 4 people with packs but didn't get on in Eugene. Unfortunately on was well on my way up the Mackenzie. I didn't want to ride all the way up so I got off at Walterville and hiked back. Nice hike on the way back. I did 5 miles before my daughter picked me up. Does this qualify. LOL

My apologies. We updated in a comment, using the app from a phone. We tried to check to see if everyone had backed out. Didn't have a way to contact you. Sorry and I hope you enjoyed what you did hike.

Yes I enjoyed what hike I did do. On future hikes I will make sure that the trip leader has my cell #. Would have been a fun hike.

Sorry we missed you. Katie, BW and I were all at the Eugene Station. We waited for others until the bus departed and after seeing it was just the three of us we decided to go have breakfast and catch on things together.

Can not wait to meet some new people, ESP hikers in the Eugene area. I would love to attend the hike, but have prior obligations. I was there yesterday, though. One of my favorite areas in Oregon.

Will there be naked people? Can I be naked people?

Swimsuits are required at Belknap Hot Springs. They have men's and women's locker rooms so you'll be able to change into dry clothes for the hike back.

Since I am unfamiliar with the bus system, is there only one bus that goes up the McKenzie? Or are there more?

How do I change my status from the waitlist to attanding? I want to go.

    April 2, 2013

  • Ron D.

I was thinking of attending. I don't understand the 12 member limit?

    April 2, 2013

    • Todd G.

Ron, it was saying I was bringing a guest. I am not. There is another spot open.

      April 2, 2013

    • Matthew H.

The 12 member limit is to limit foot traffic upon heavily used trails. It is also done due to larger groups having people getting way ahead or way behind. This allows the group to stay together better. There will be other hikes to come and enjoy.
