Spencer's Butte Weekly Sunset Hike - 8/14/2013

Sunset - 8:20 p.m.

To keep the group going, I've decided to set up a regular Spencer's Butte Sunset Hike every week on Wednesday evening.

Each hike will officially leave about one hour before sunset, although you can start earlier or later and join the group at the top. I'm not going to cancel any hikes regardless of the weather. If you go on all of these, you'll be in shape before you know it! Don't wait for me or anyone else at the parking lot unless you want to. Just leave at the designated time and we'll all meet at the top. (Note: don't go alone unless you know the trail well.)

We'll take the main trail, so go straight ahead from the parking lot (don't take the trail on the left). Walk 1/2 mile and stay left at the trail junction. Then it's 1/2 mile to the top, with 800 feet elevation gain. It gets rocky near the top, so look for 3" round metal trail markers attached to the rocks.

Civil twilight, bright enough to see, only lasts about 30 minutes after sunset. So be sure to bring a headlamp or a flashlight, since we'll be walking the last part in the dark. For safety, please walk with at least one other person, and bring your cell phone. If you're the second to the last person, make sure the last person isn't left behind!

Getting together after the hike at a restaurant or bar is highly encouraged. See you this Wednesday.

The time lapse video came out better than I thought it would, complete with dog tail in front of the camera and people walking by. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3v6LbLkSgQ

I enjoyed the hike, even though there wasn't too much of a sunset. Great meeting some new people I hadn't talked to before. Always a pleasure to talk about the outdoors with others and share a few ideas, as well as laughs. Great time!

I can't make it tonight, but will try next week. I have hiked the butte countless times, but never in a big group.

Hello again. I just ran into Colleen in downtown Eugene, and she informed me that the group doesn't always go to Agate Alley. Maybe someone could call me at (458)[masked] if the group makes other plans. If I'm not home, just leave a message with directions to the place. Thanks in advance to whoever calls me, and thank you, Colleen, for letting me know.

Man, this is frustrating! My doctor just told me I should stay away from steep hikes for at least another week! I'll still show up at Agate Alley to say hi to everyone. See you there.

We don't always go to Agate Alley. If we're not there, try the bar part of Turtles across the street.

I hope to make it, and will adjust my RSVP if I can't.

I take a different trail up, so my friend and I will see everyone at the top :-)
