Spencer's Butte Weekly Sunset Hike - 9/11/2013

Sunset - 7:32 p.m.

To keep the group going, I've decided to set up a regular Spencer's Butte Sunset Hike every week on Wednesday evening.

Each hike will officially leave about one hour before sunset, although you can start earlier or later and join the group at the top. I'm not going to cancel any hikes regardless of the weather. If you go on all of these, you'll be in shape before you know it! Don't wait for me or anyone else at the parking lot unless you want to. Just leave at the designated time and we'll all meet at the top. (Note: don't go alone unless you know the trail well.)

We'll take the main trail, so go straight ahead from the parking lot (don't take the trail on the left). Walk 1/2 mile and stay left at the trail junction. Then it's 1/2 mile to the top, with 800 feet elevation gain. It gets rocky near the top, so look for 3" round metal trail markers attached to the rocks.

Civil twilight, bright enough to see, only lasts about 30 minutes after sunset. So be sure to bring a headlamp or a flashlight, since we'll be walking the last part in the dark. For safety, please walk with at least one other person, and bring your cell phone. If you're the second to the last person, make sure the last person isn't left behind!

Getting together after the hike at a restaurant or bar is highly encouraged. See you this Wednesday.

Posted time to leave the hike Is 6:30pm and usually people arrive 15 mins early to meet and chat a bit and a group usually forms In the middle of the parking area . With driving up to the sign, Spencers Butte, clearly marked on the South East side as you turn drive Into the lane to the parking area that Is paved , some when driving up Willamette mistake the area that Is the Ridgeline trail parking area which Is a gravel parking lot, Spencers Is further up and just as you start to enter tall fir trees on both sides of the road.
Group size so far listed Is 9 people.

I have a question: How many will be waiting at the stairs before the hike starts? I am coming to the hike alone, but would like to know whom will be waiting for others to begin....I don't wish to get lost on my first meetup group hike...Thanks:)

There are many ways to get there, but here is my suggestion, with regards to eliminating the amount of roads and directions needed. Head south on I-5 and take Exit 189 towards East 30th and Lane Community College. Follow the exit to the right, onto McVay Highway, which runs parallel to I-5. Turn right at East 30th and go past the college and up and over the hill. Take a left at the light at Hilyard. Continue to East 40th, and take a right. Stay on East 40th until you come to Willamette Street, where you will take a left. Follow Willamette Street to the parking lot of Spencer Butte, which will be on your left, and paved. If you come to a parking lot that is gravel, you need to continue up the road further to a green sign marking the park and parking lot. I hope that helps you out.

The group always hikes together. Most of the times the group meets near the middle of the parking lot, or near the stairs leading to the trail. I hope that helps.
