Ready for an exciting day of hiking and exploring? Let's head out and do Tillamook Head, nestled in between Seaside and Cannon Beach. It's the perfect time of year to have a shot at seeing some whales and avoiding tourists!
Here's the plan: Meet at Albertson's promptly at 9. Hopefully we'll recruit one or two folks with a van depending on the crowd and we can carpool and share gas. Yes, this one is a haul, it'll likely take around 3 hours to get there. But it's worth it!
As Captain Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) said as he surveyed the pacific from this location: "I behold the grandest and most pleasing prospect which my eyes ever surveyed."
Anyway... We should arrive around noon so bringing a lunch would be a swell idea. he trail essentially goes along the bluff from Cannon Beach to Seaside, with several prominent viewpoints and old growth forests. The basic trail is a 3.6 mile loop, moderately easy enough for everyone to keep up with some breaks. If we're feeling spiffy we can continue on further. The bluff is 1200 feet tall with a commanding view of the ocean and rocky outcroppings. This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful coastal areas of Oregon.
After we hike, we'll head over to Cannon Beach and frolic in the sand (note: frolicking optional). And then hit a quaint seaside restaurant for dinner before heading back home.
A few things to note:
- again, this is a long drive. Provided everyone is up for dinner and a bit of beach exploring, plan to be gone around 12 hours.
- this should be a fairly moderate hike, around 4 miles roundtrip with a fair bit of climbing and some steep points. By the numbers it's a 900 foot elevation gain over 1.6 miles. Consider it similar in difficulty to the first part of our recent Mt. June hike.
- there is a $3 day use fee to park, but hopefully we'll all carpool
- If you don't want to be gone so long and would rather skip the beach/dinner (but really, if you're driving this far you might as well make a day of it), put it in your comments so I can try to plan rides appropriately.
