A note about car-pooling

[Apologies if you get this twice - I had trouble sending it]

Short version: You can't really sort cars out until the day anyway.

Longer version: I've noticed that on some recent trips, people have begun to
specify whether they are willing to drive as part of a car-pool or need a
ride. To my mind, this adds confusion, and risks people not signing up for the
trip because it looks like there might not be space in a car. Given the
differences in who signs up vs. who turns up, it's impossible to pre-arrange
anyway. My experience in New Zealand (over several hundred trips where there
wasn't even a sign up and people car-pooled on the day), was that about 50% of
people had cars available, so in 99% of cases it works out fine (the 1% were
when there were very small numbers and no-one had a car).

I'd suggest guidelines of:
* Sign up and turn up, even if you can't offer a car,
* If you can be a driver without too much hassle, be prepared to do so (to try
and avoid that 1%). We do try and arrange it so that those who prefer to drive
end up driving, so if you are a reluctant driver, you probably won't be
required to. Indicating this in advance is not necessary.
* The trip leader should probably be prepared to bring a car (not possible in
my case).
* If you have some special requirements or preferences (meet at trailhead,
leave early, stay overnight), be prepared to get there on your own, and in
that case say what the requirements/preferences are when signing up.
