The Steens would be awesome. Also in response to Mari's suggestion and as a native and long time former resident to Humboldt County, I can attest to it's very unique geological and geographical beauty hosting the largest trees in the world (if you can find any these days). The Lost Coast is gorgeous but the coastal trail that runs from Mattole CG south is a lot of sand walking and vehicles are allowed in portions of that trail, not to mention being subjected to high tides and possible rogue waves. Ideally the Kings Crest trail would be perfect at about 16 miles. Essentially can be walked in one day but would probably be more enjoyable making it a 2 day, 1 night pack trip. However, early summer is best due to water sources as we are on the crest. Many nice areas to swim on the Eel river and surrounding creeks in addition to all the other scenic spots around. For those that have not seen this part of California, you will NOT be dissapointed as it's
beauty is immense, rugged, and paramount to any other area I have seen. And for those who wish for continued and longer expeditions, the Trinity Alps between Arcata and Redding is also gorgeous with numerous long trails. If any wish for more info, contact me.
