Hi I'm an assistant organizer with the Minneapolis/St. Paul Backpackers Meetup... and also camped with your group at Rice Lake State Park this summer. I thought you might be interested in this camping trip, which involves NO backpacking. It's a fun group. A good friend of mine has set up this trip and it will be very similar to what you're used to in the State Parks group. Here is what he posted, including links....  Thanks! Lisa Brainard

Wanting to get one more good weekend of camping in before the
snow hits but not wanting to share the woods with all those
hunters on the trail? Join us for this weekend of camping and
hiking the trails at Perrot State Park in Wisconsin the weekend
of October 9-10-11.

The park is located just down river from Winona in Wisconsin.
We will be staying at the group "A" campsite. I was at the park
on 9/19 and the leaves had barely started changing so they
should be in full color by that time. The park has great trails
with spectacular views of the bluffs and overlooking the
wetlands of the Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge

This will be a "car camping" event so bring all the
conveniences you want for keeping warm at night, cooking great
dishes, and lounging during the day if that is your desire. I
plan to hike the roughly 8 mile loop up to Brady's Bluff,
around Perrot Ridge and past Reeds Peak to the bluffs on the
east end of the park. It is a great hike that combines great
bluffland views with hiking through ravines in a forest with a
very high canopy and short under growth.

Later on Saturday evening we can hike up to Trempealeau
Mountain to view a great sunset over the wildlife refuge and
then enjoy another great evening around the campfire.

I will have a jumbo tarp set up just in case rain is predicted.
The campsite is about 1 foot from the parking area so you won't
need to carry the gear very far.

The $5 cost for this event is to help cover the cost of the
group site. I will be collecting the money at the campsite.
Although you can sign up at anytime, early signup is
appreciated to allow for planning. (After all, there may be
some dutch oven cooking) If the campsite becomes full, camping
will be limited to those who signed up. All vehicles will need
Wisconsin State Park sticker/permit.

Carpooling can be arranged with members of the group through
the website.
