Turkey Run 2014

Come say good-bye to Spring & hello to Summer. Turkey Run is a favorite amongst campers and has been requested by many members.

Camp Reservations link, http://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/

You'll marvel at the natural geologic wonders of this beautiful park as you hike along its famous trails. Nestled along State Road 47 southwest of Crawfordsville, the park offers the chance to explore deep, sandstone ravines, walk along stands of aged forests, and enjoy the scenic views along Sugar Creek.

For those wanting to stay at the lodge, please be aware the lodge may be sold out for the weekend. Please think about reservations as early as possible.

Be sure to post your site number with your RSVP and let us know if you are looking for anyone to share your site. Each site can have up two sleeping tents or one tent and one camper and can have as many as six occupants.

Kids are welcome to attend all Happy Camper events unless otherwise stated in the event description. Dogs are also welcome but please be considerate of other campers when deciding if your dog is a good camper (not too noisy, not a biter, etc.) and follow all rules pertaining to pets. Alcohol is consumed at your own discretion but please remember to be respectful where children are concerned and follow appropriate quiet time protocols.

For those who are new to the Happy Campers, here's a brief layout of what you can generally expect on a camping weekend. People begin to arrive at the campground as early as 2:00 pm (first check in time), some not arriving until later in the evening or even until Saturday morning. After folks get their campsites set up, we tend to congregate together around a central fire, where old friends catch up and new friends introduce themselves.

On Saturday's people come and go as they wish, sometimes as a group, sometimes as individuals. Nearby are the counties of Parke and Putnam counties, and many beautiful covered bridges and many people flock to these areas for sight-seeing and shopping. If you are into hiking, chances are you'll find someone who's up for a hike. Same goes for fishing, geocaching, horse-back riding, biking, whatever. And some folks just want to hang around the campground and rest or play games.

We will have a Saturday evening pitch-in dinner for anyone who wants to participate.  Show off your campfire cooking skills or just bring a salad, dessert, etc.  If you are not contributing a main course item, please bring at least two side/dessert items.  (Be creative!  You can do better than a bag of chips and some dip!)  After dinner we'll again gather around the fire to laugh, tell stories, etc.

On Sunday, people will pack up at their leisure and either head home early or enjoy the afternoon in the park. Check-out in state parks is 5:00 pm on Sundays.

Many campers choose to share sites with others. Typically a camper will book a site and then post with their RSVP what site they have and if they have room for another tent. New campers should rest assured that we are a friendly and very welcoming group. If you need help setting up a tent, you'll get it. If you need to borrow any equipment, let us know, someone will have what you need. Whether you are shy or outgoing, young or old, experienced or a first time camper, I am certain you will not find yourself out of place with the Happy Campers!

What a gorgeous weekend! We were expecting rain on Friday and it turned out to be dry as a bone (except for the humidity). The hiking was AMAZING, and the pool was very refreshing after each day of hiking. It was a very big campground and hard to find people, but maybe next time we can all print a small sign that says Happy Camper and stick at our site so we can recognize each other?

Is there going to be a pitch - in on Saturday? If so, what's everyone bringing?

    June 20, 2014

    • Leanne

The event description says we will do a pitchin. I'm willing to host in 186 and will ask jerry tomorrow if we can spread out to his site too (185).

leaving now 1:36pm hopefully be there about an hour maybe. For those unaware, I work full time second shift 4pm-1am. Getting Friday night off isn't always possible during summer months.

Due to the predicted forecast we will not be attending afterall... We aren't prepared nor have the proper camping gear to camp in rain. I don't have a popup or an RV. Just a simple tent & sleeping bags. Rather give the reservation to others that are better prepared & will make good use. :(

We are probably going to cancel this weekend. It looks like rain again and my driveway is under construction and has taken longer than it was scheduled. I'm so bummed.

I just booked on 188. Jerry I can't seem to get the event settings to allow more than +2 guests. We will be at least our 4.

We are closely watching the forecast, and planning to rent a canoe for a trip on Saturday afternoon. If 5 others are willing to commit, we can get a discount be reserving in advance.

We are 1st timers at Turkey Run looking forward to LOTS of rugged hiking, open to hiking companions. We will be camping at site 157 in the electric loop, and look forward to seeing those we met at our first camping meetup, and meeting new folks as well! Is anyone else booked nearby?

Sorry, I had closed this to new rsvp's but I chose to re-open it for those looking to share sites but we are getting more requests than is available. The park itself is sold out for that weekend. So I have chosen to close it to rsvp's once again.

Hi, I am a newbie :-) Just tried to register for a site and they are all gone. I have not camped in Indiana for the past 2 years, not sure if anything has changed or not. Are first come first serve sites still the majority of available sites or are they all by reservation now? Do you think if I went up early, like Wed. or Thurs. I might find a first come first serve site if such sites are still available.
    Thanks.

Turkey Run has always been very popular. It's a nice place (or used to be at least). Haven't been for a few years.

Hi everyone, along with the RSVP for this camping trip, what else do I need to do to make sure my husband & I guaranteed a spot? Do I need to call the park & make arrangements of us? If so, can someone give me the specifics? New to Indy & we've never been to Turkey Run

My wife and I will be in site 157. This is my birthday week, so I'm hopeful that I will be able to take that Friday off and come early. What are the best hikes in this area?

Turkey Run park has several trails rated for difficulty. None are very long, but they are pretty fun. http://www.turkeyruns...
