August theme is "Tanks, Tanks, Tanks!" - August 23, 2013 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Kursk, one of the most titanic battles of world history. The Battle of Prokhorovka (which actually took place in July, 1943) is generally accepted as the largest armoured engagements ever. To commemorate this massive conflict, August's theme encompasses games which involves armoured fighting vehicles at any scale, from the skirmish level to the grand strategic, from 1916 to 2013.
Candidate games include: Panzer 2nd. Ed (GMT), MBT (AH), Fighting Formations (GMT), Advanced Squad Leader (AH/MMP), Band of Brothers (WG), Landships! (CoA), Dawn's Early Light (LnL), LnL: Heroes of the Gap (LnL), PanzerBlitz/Leader (AH), Panzer Grenadier (AP), WWII: Barbarossa to Berlin (GMT), Cobra (TSR/SPI), FAB: Bulge (GMT), MechWar '77 (SPI), Into the Bastards! (BM)
You need not play a game related to the theme; the idea behind the theme is to get people to play games or explore eras or systems that they might not otherwise.
Remember to pre-arrange your games and opponents on our message board in this
Newcomers are always welcome. You don't need to bring a game if you don't have one; other members usually bring far more than are necessary.
We will be playing in the parlour of Forest Hill United Church, located at 2 Wembley Road, just north of Eglinton on Bathurst Street. Look for paper signs posted on the doors to guide you to the room. When you approach from the parking lot, go to the doors on your left, not the main doors into the sanctuary.
IMPORTANT ROOM LOCATION NOTE: Due to ongoing church renovations, we have been asked to occupy a slightly smaller new space which is in a room to the right when coming up the stairs. I will post signs to assist people in finding the new space. There is plenty of space for gaming; it's just a little more 'compact' than our current space.
The lighting in the space is somewhat less than our current space and may be inadequate for -ahem- 'more experienced' eyeballs. If anyone has small floor lamps or table lamps which they can bring to light up the space a little, it would be appreciated.
Some parking is available in the streets nearby the church and you may also park in the lot if there are spaces available - many spaces clear up right around 11 AM. There is another event happening at 5:30, so we have been asked to move vehicles out of the parking lot by 5 PM where possible. If you are able to park a little further away offpremises, you will be able to stay the entire day until 6 PM without moving.
To get to the church by TTC, take the #32 bus east (if coming from Eglinton West station on the University line) or the same bus going west (if coming from Eglinton station on the Yonge line). Both buses run frequently. Get off at Bathurst and walk one (short) block north on the west side of Bathurst. There is no admission fee, but a small donation to the church's property committee is appreciated.
