Eaton Canyon

  • Mar 10, 2013 · 7:15 AM

Lower Eaton Canyon!

I'm hoping for a nice warm sunny day... cold weather or rain cancels and we'll try again the next week.

-Andre

This event is now on Sunday since it will be 10f warmer Sunday. Remember to change your clocks!

--------------------------------------------------

- 8 Mile/ 2130' hike in
- 3B IV Rated, 10 rappels plus down climbing
- Beta: dankat.com

Lots of swimming and wading!

Not a beginner canyon so everyone should have 3 or 4 canyons under their belt.

Trail Head:

The trail head is the start of the Mount Wilson Toll Road in Altadena. [masked]n[masked]w.

Meet at 7:15am sharp for a gear check. I think the gate opens at 7:30am (someone correct me if not) and we need to start hiking as early as possible.

Gear:
Everyone will need their personal canyoneering gear.

Bring your ropes n' stuff and we'll sort it out at the trail head.

Wetsuits required!

Awesome day in Eaton! 7 hrs car-to-car not hurrying but not standing around either. I used a shortie since it was a hot day, and was cold in the first part but after the second rap we were in the sun and it was perfect. I'd suggest a jacket over a shortie as the ideally combo. The pool at the 2nd to last falls is only about five feet deep so no jumping yet.

I think about ten feet of rope should about do it. (But we'll check first)

That pool used to be very deep. But yeah, somebody should check first. I heard Eaton has changed a lot in the last couple of years.

There's probably enough people to run trips both days if you want to post an event.

They lock the gate at sundown (and I've heard sometimes randomly well before then) and we'll probably be slow with a large group. Last time we would have been locked in if we didn't have a guy with the key in our group, so I'd like an early start.

If you anticipate exiting after they lock the gate, there's another entry/exit option that extends the trip 1/2 a mile each way, so 1 total. It is just SE of the usual gate. I'd still strive for an early start.

A later start will be fine. Early starts are recommended for summer time to beat the heat while hiking the approach.
Wetsuits should be mandatory this time of year.
Henninger Flats still has "bacteria notice" so plan on hauling up all the water you will need for the trip.

    Enjoy!

I have a 200' and 120' rope plus 60' of webbing and plenty of rap rings.
