Red Rocks Mini-Rondy - Memorial Day!!

I've got 2 group campsites next to each other at Red Rocks CG on Friday, Saturday, Sunday evenings!  Room for 16 cars and 40 people .. the campground is for visiting canyoneers from LA, etc and will definitely fill-up with out-of-towners, but it will be a great spot for everyone to gather for planning, evening potlucks and morning carpools!  I'll lead a group each day and others will have to step up to lead others, as well.  Woohoo!!

If you want to keep your eye on available reservations in the same area, we'll be able to accommodate more people.  Individual sites are not reservable, but the group sites are.

Canyons in the immediate area:
Icebox, IceCube, Hidden Falls Canyons, Toad Pool, Mud Springs??
More details to come!!

Thanks, Everyone, for being such great sports...and, Klaus, for organizing it. What a great idea! And what if only so many showed up? They were definitely the best ones:) Had a great time....especially that I got to do 2 awesome canyons. Thanks to both you and Scott for letting me tag along. Wish I could have done a 3rd with Logan...oh, and thanks for the entertainment:) (now that I am home from work before midnight, I will try to post pics also)

Change in plans - I will not be able to make it until Sunday night. Save me a good canyon!

I tried to make it to the campground last night (Sunday), but was way too late. I am heading home now and hope to see people in another canyon someday.

If anyone is interested, I will be leading the Hidden Falls Canyon on one of the days. I just completed this canyon a couple of months ago, and it is spectacular! Hidden Falls Canyon is located in the Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area. Some beta basics: Hiking time: 7 hours 20 minutes; Estimated hiking distance: 2.5 miles; Elevation gain: 1240 feet; Difficulties: Seven rappels up to 110ft, much bouldering and down climbing; Special equipment: Rappelling equipment, 60 meter rope, 50 feet webbing, 7 rappel rings. 130 feet recovery cord, harnesses and helmets. Special Note: this canyon requires a shuttle and a 4WD for the ascent vehicle. I have a 4WD vehicle we can use. However, it only holds 4 people, so someone will nee to step up to take more. The recovery vehicle does not need to go off asphalt.

Howdy folks. The rest of the logistics will happen at camp. All canyons will be starting fairly early to beat the afternoon heat. There have been so many cancellations that everyone is welcome at the campground. Ill have some welcome happy hour type snacks this afternoon to share and don't forget to bring something for the potluck ofn Sunday night. Be sure to check in, sign the paperwork and look for canyon signup sheets. See you soon. Btw, I'm in the orange marmot tent by site G if you need me when you arrive!! Klaus

Hi everyone! I'll be driving in from OC by myself (my girlfriend was coming but she can't make it) and I'd like to join at least a Sat and Sun canyon. Can anyone squeeze me in? I'm probably going to drive late tonight so if you're starting early, LMK so I can get there in time! Cheers

How about we have a potluck picnic dinner on Sunday evening? Everybody should come .. even those not camping with us!! Let's say 6:00ish (gives people a chance to finish a big canyon and grab something at the store and prepare it, socialize, etc). Bring your favorite dish to feed 4-6 people. ideas: potato salad, bean salad, macaroni salad, fruit salad, baked beans, coleslaw, hot dogs, buns, hamburgers, chips & dip, pickles, condiments, charcoal, lemonade, crudité (croute de te) bratwurst & sauerkraut, brownies ... don't go crazy (unless you're into that) .. just bring some stuff to share ... and, bring your own camp chairs, utensils, plates, headlamps, etc.

Klaus, or anyone else who's familiar with the Red Rocks area, do you think it's advisable to bring a wetsuit this time of year? I have one by my girlfriend doesn't (and if either of us has a tendency to get cold, it's her). If anyone can offer advice, or even better has a girl's suit we could possibly borrow, that would be awesome! She's about 5'8", slim. Cheers!

    May 22, 2013

    • Aniko

Hi Thomas - depending on which canyons you do, you may need a wetsuit. Sport Chalet rents them for $15 (not sure if there is a store in your area)

      May 22, 2013

  • Thomas H.

Klaus, my girlfriend and I have harnesses and a couple of carabiners but no ropes etc. Will there be group gear we can all share? Cheers.

    April 23, 2013

    • Klaus G.

Hopefully there will enough people bringing gear to accommodate the canyons they're going to descend! I'll bring a couple extra ropes, too.

I would like to attend a Saturday trip and maybe a shorter Sunday canyon. I am meeting friends in Vegas from the East Coast for their trip Sunday afternoon on into the week. I am driving from Colorado and would like to know before I head out if I can make this trip. Appreciate it.

Alrighty! I see some activity on here .. that's awesome! Nice invite from Mark ... though I have a feeling it will be too big a group. People coming from all over .. phoenix, bay area, fresno, LA, etc .. Not many leaders posting canyons ... Keep in mind that you are responsible for your own activities! I'm sure there will be people seeking appropriate partners ... but make sure you have a back-up plan. Bring beta, gps, ropes, etc so you can grab a rookie-friendly canyon if necessary! FYI it's best to keep groups between 6-8 people. Here's my #: Klaus[masked]-0104. I'm arriving sometime around noon on Friday (unless someone wants to grab an easy canyon on Friday near the Virgin River Gorge or?? The campsites are available for us after noon on Friday and are ours until 11am on Monday. I'll be out of touch until Friday .. .doing a bunch of the fun canyons in Zion again: Das Boot, Subway, Mystery, Spry, Pine Creek, Keyhole and Middle-Echo ... Woohoo!
    Looking forward to meeting!!

    6) DETAILS: Whoever chooses not to answer the above questions will be removed from the event.
    7) CAMP: We have group sites F & G at the Red Rock Canyon Campground, located two miles east of the RRCNCA visitor center on West Charleston Boulevard (State Route 159.) The campground is located one mile south on Moenkopi Road from the junction with West Charleston Boulevard. Bring Water; There are only Pit Toilets; No Campfires; Covered Picnic Tables. Since parking is at a premium, plan on bringing a tent ... sleeping in cars is going to be inconvenient for everyone else.

I'll be driving solo from LA area around noon (unless anyone wants to ride with with me), and I'll be staying in a hotel so my vehicle won't take up a spot.

I'm looking forward to doing ice cube and big falls.

    Klaus,

    4) LEADERS: If you are planning on leading canyons each day, please post them here and let people know how many participants you'd like as part of your group.
    5) NON-LEADERS: Please look at the beta available for canyons in the area, in addition to the ones that will be posted, and let the group know which ones you'd like to descend, and please be sure to choose canyons which you are competent to descend and where you will be a technically contributing member of the group. There are no guides attending this event; everyone is expected to be a trained and/or experienced canyoneer; and of course, everyone is responsible for their own safety. Many of the canyons require 4WD and/or high-clearance to reach the trailheads .. please make sure that each canyon group has figured out their car shuttles!

    May 14, 2013

  • Klaus G.

Alrighty folks .. I need some info from you!
    1) RSVP: Please update your RSVP immediately if you are not planning to attend this event.
    2) CAMPING: Do you live in Las Vegas or are you looking to camp with us at Red Rocks? Everyone is welcome to camp with us, however, the campsites only allow 8 autos each for parking. Priority will be given to people who are carpooling. I understand there is additional parking at the Red Rock Hotel on Charleston Blvd.
    3) CARPOOLING: Are you carpooling/How many in your party?

You can find descriptions of Vegas area canyons at:
    www.bluugnome.com or
Facebook: "Las Vegas Slots Canyoneering Project"
You might want wetsuits, depending on your choice of canyons.

What is the site for permits? I am only able to find ones for rock climbing

    April 15, 2013

    • Klaus G.

There are no permits required for day-canyoneering in the area. Late exit permits for the loop road are available by phone the day-of any expected longer days.
