Learn to Rappel Workshop!

Interested in learning to Rappel & Canyoneer?

Did the movie 127 Hours intrigue you?!

This workshop is a very basic introduction to rappelling, safety checks, communication and fireman belaying (bottom belaying). This workshop is in no way a substitute for the full Technical Canyoneering Course. This course will, however, provide you with an introduction to rappelling, safety checks, communication and bottom belays that can make taking the full course more beneficial.  (To keep abreast of Canyoneering Courses, Events and Activities, check out the calendar at:  http://www.meetup.com/canyoneering)

We will spend the whole day rappelling at Stoney Point in Chatsworth.

Single strand on 8.3mm and 9.2mm static canyoneering rope!

I will also bring a couple of descenders for you to try: Piranas and Figure 8's.

That's all we're going to do ... all day. So ...

If you don't know how to rappel .. come learn.

If you want to try out different descenders and ropes .. come experiment.

If you know how to rappel .. come practice.

This workshop will last all day .. 7am-3:30pm so bring lunch & water!

You will be required to sign a release of liability and assumption of risk. You may participate all day or for a few hours ... it's YOUR day.

Gear for this workshop is a climbing harness (I can loan you one), a helmet (climbing, bicycle, kayaking, snow boarding .. any helmet .. but you gotta have one!  If you've got nothing, let me know in advance and I'll loan you one.) If you're got a pair of gloves .. mechanics, cycling, weightlifting, garden .. any kind of gloves, your hands will be happier! And feel free to bring any gear you have questions about ... I'm happy to show you how to use your own descender and to answer any/all gear questions.

We will be scrambling around a lot as we rappel, scramble back up, rappel, scramble back up, rappel, scramble back up, etc. ....so wear some comfortable shoes with good 'grip' .. trail, running, approach shoes all work well (don't wear rock climbing shoes). Bring sunscreen, maybe a hat, and clothes/layers appropriate for the forecast.

This workshop is open to everyone .. so invite your friends, your teenage kids, your spouse to join and sign-up as +1 +2 +3 etc.

The cost for this workshop is $40 per person ... AND participants will be given a $40 discount on the tuition of a future 3-day Technical Canyoneering Course ... THAT WOULD MAKE THIS WORKSHOP FREE!! To reserve your spot, you MUST send in the $40 fee within 2 days of your RSVP to Uber Adventures, 427 S Serrano Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90020 or paypal to: [masked]

Your Instructor: Klaus Gerhart, American Canyon Guides Association certified Guide, Officer and Instructor, Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Technical Rope Rescue Technician, Basic Mountaineering Instructor for Sierra Club's Wilderness Travel Course, Whitewater Rafting Guide and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics Master Educator.

What people are saying about this workshop:

"What a fabulous day! Great group of people and awesome instructor! You have got to meet Klaus! If you haven't tried this, you're missing out. Klaus is all about safety first, but teaches in a way that makes you count the seconds to rappel and canyoneer! I'd rate this as a 15 out of 10! Can't wait to see what else he's cooking up. Thanks to Jason for his assistance!"  -C- (Carmen B 2/2/13)

"Best Meetup I've ever been to.  What a great group of people .. Klaus encourages us all to support one another and we learned how to care for each others' safety!  I look forward to more adventure and instruction!  Thanks Klaus, I loved every minute of it."  -Lynda-

"Had a blast!  Met very cool people.  Klaus is a great instructor, super supportive and his assistant(s) are knowledgeable and patient!  Can't wait to do it again."  -Aurora-

Informative and focused on subject matter. A thorough explanation on proper use of equipment was clear and understanding. Proper safety checks and verbal commands were reviewed and utilized during the course. Highly recommend this class as a refresher and great for beginner like myself!! Thank you Klaus!!

If you haven't paid the $40 by now, you may pay it at the event in cash ... but if you are late, we won't know to wait for you ... so DON'T BE LATE!!

I would like to meet everyone at my truck at 7:15am, which will be parked on the East side of Topanga Canyon Blvd near the Stoney Point Park sign. (10900 Topanga Canyon Blvd) in Chatsworth. My truck is a blue Dodge Ram 4x4 with a shell (CA Plates: UBER ADV). Please arrive early to grab your parking spot and gather your gear and yourself to leave from my truck at 7:30am. If any one person is late you will be holding up the workshop for 15 people!

If there are unforeseen circumstances that cause you to be late, gather your gear, wait by my truck, and call my cell phone:[masked]; I will send someone to get you.

Don't leave any valuables in your car as it is an invitation to theft! Even a blanket in the back seat appears to a thief, to be hiding something of value ... you've been warned!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
