Hall Beckley Canyon — 3BIII

Looks like it's the season for local canyons! Hall Beckley looks interesting. 8 rappels with a few big raps, one at 140ft. There is usually not much water in the canyon and no substantial pools, just might get the feet wet.

There will be a bit of down climbs so be prepared for that. Also I wouldn't recommend this as a total beginner canyon.

Some info from Chris Brennan's site: "Hall Beckley Canyon drops steeply down the south face of Mount Lukens into La Canada/Flintridge. It is a moderately challenging, quite brush-free canyon with several big rappels and lots of small downclimbs. Water runs in its lower reaches most of the year but there are no substantial pools to negotiate so only your feet will get wet. It is best for the winter, spring or fall; in the summer the hike up to the head of the canyon is very hot."

The rest of the beta is here:

There is a car shuttle so we will meet in La Canada at the point we will be exiting the canyon. 5147 Palm Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA. Just park somewhere on the road there and we will shuttle up to the drop-in point on the Angeles Crest Highway. If we have 8 people we will need at least 4 cars to fit everyone.

I have a 200' 9mm rope but we will need another to do this canyon. We will also need 60ft of webbing and 8 rap rings. Please note what you can bring. The most important thing would be a second rope.

It is a 7 hour canyon so we are meeting early, 7:30 am at the canyon exit.

If someone has a handheld gps it could come in handy.

There is an 8 person limit on this meetup.

Nice canyon, lots of down climbs. Can't help but get your feet wet at the bottom.

Hiking the fire road is officially faster than the car shuttle (slow pokes!). Good canyon, no poison oak, but only a couple of nice rappels. Great crew of course.

I had a fun time and met a lot of great people with a ton of knowledge. The canyon was a little more technical as far as rigging the ropes, so I was happy to be grouped with individuals that had that knowledge.

All; sorry for the delay took me longer then I though to dig it up. you can find the "from the bottom" approach at:

it is a 2000 vert ft ascent but is on a fire road most/all of the way.

Thanks Jason. Easy enough; follow the dirt road until the drop-in point. 2,000' should not be a big deal.

Anyone want to carpool from West LA/Santa Monica? I'll bring my 200' ft rope.

In order to fit everyone in Dominik will be leading a hike from the bottom exit point. Add your name here if this is the route you would like to take. If we can split it up 6-6 that would be good. I don't have the beta for this route but it sounds like Jason does.

WARNING. THERE IS A TON OF POISON OAK IN THIS CANYON. The 140 can be a multi stage too if you want. I think there are[masked]ft landing areas

      Is it avoidable if spotted?

There is a non-shuttle option for this canyon, heading up a fire road that is to the west of the canyon. I'll dig out my old GPS track and send it out.

Great Scott! Looks like Eric has a 200' which I think will be a bit easier as we have a 140' rap. Bring it just in case though and we'll figure it out when we meet at the exit point.

I've got a 200ft 9mm canyon pro and bag. I can bring webbing if necessary. I also have a truck that can hold 5-6 more people and backpacks can go in the bed.
