NYE Canyoning

I've got the day off on NYE, 12/31 and would like to get out to play. I'm thinking either Rubio (didn't get there on Thursday, and I need to seek/recover some lost gear) or San Antonio Falls. If some good snow falls locally, I'm leaning toward San Antonio, as I'll then head to Mtn. High for some night skiing; although I may do the same w/ Rubio. Let me know if you're interested.

I will limit attendance based on skill level, keeping a balance of experience to inexperienced canyoners. Normal canyon gear required (helmet, harness, rap device, personal anchor, warm clothes/wetsuits, etc...)

Time and meeting location (based on canyon chosen) is TBD.

How did I miss this? DAMN! Sorry folks! Did you hike up the normal trail or drop in somewhere?

Oh, the one that burnt down up at Echo Mountain. I've hiked up through there several times - but just never came down. How are the upper 3 raps?

Sorry, miscounted, it's just 2 rappels. 1st, the upper-most rappel is a short 20' into a shallow pool (3' deep) and the next rappel is a 2-stage rappel where you can slide the bottom section which is pretty fun.

Yes it was great canyoning with you two as well. Somil, I hope you took that wetsuit off eventually...

Hey gang, I'll be working until 7:30 tonight, afterward, if anyone needs to reach me after then, ring me at[masked]-nine. My car's on it's last leg and I'm hoping it holds up so that I can go tomorrow, I will figure it out on the way to/from work today. Otherwise, the plan is to head for Rubio Canyon, meeting at the trailhead at 8am, hiking by 8:30am. I've only done this canyon by dropping in from the White City (great lunch stop) but if anyone (Craigerino) would like to take the alternate approach, I'm all game.

I will have 200' rope, 50' pull cord, anchor gear, and my personal gear. I will also have extra dry bags to lend out if needed. You will need to bring a mandatory helmet, harness, rappel device, and a personal anchor (I have these too). Wetsuits will make you more willing to play in the water, but really good synthetic insulation may get you through with less comfort. Ok, off to work for me, I'll try to check the conversation during the day.

I did San Antonio in the snow before. There was an amazing snow cave above the regular 6 raps - but otherwise, it's not worth the hike to the Ski Hut for one more rap. With no wading, you can get away with dry suits but unless you are experieced, wear a wetsuit for sure - at least 3MM.

San Antonio Creek will probably have below-freezing temps most of the day, and may have fresh snow on the ground: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=34.257783966839966&lon=-117.64503479003906
