An afternoon at Battery Marcus Miller: NEW LOCATION, BAKER BEACH

Join us for a few games of capture the flag. At the hour of assembly, rules and strategy will be presented, teams will be carved, and colors will be assigned.

Before the flag games, we'll warm up with something known as hare and hounds. If you own chalk, esp. big pieces of colored chalk, please bring it.

This location combines concrete bunkers with cedar forest. You'll like the views.

Once we're exhausted, we'll head to dinner. I propose Lime Tree, on Irving between 5th and 6th.

Great terrain. I have an idea for a lightning round variation for next time.

Certainly not a rule change to be used in the majority of games, perhaps just at the start of the day to get people running around.

I like the idea. But it could still lead to indecision, as teams fretted about how to allocate players to offense and defense. Please sign up for the next game (posted but not yet announced), and bring this and all of your other ideas with you. We'll open with your variant #1.

In spite of the last minute switcheroo, this was a terrific series of games.

I got broken glass in my foot on Monday. I'll see tomorrow, but I'm hopeful.

I don't see Battery Marcus Miller on the map. I do see square map markings on Miller Rd. Is that where it's taking place?

    July 22, 2013

    • Sam G.

Thanks, Jermaine. I wonder whether I got the name of the battery wrong. In any case, I've moved the marker on the map so that it now indicates with astounding precision where we'll be playing. We tend to round up near the parking lot to the south of the playing area, then make our way to the battery. I don't think you'll miss a group of thirty people waving flags around.

I'll be down south for my little brother's birthday on the 27th. This game will be in Sam's capable hands.

I'm upset I couldn't make the last CTF Night game :| Friend had her graduation party. I'll try again this time around! Also, when I organized a Night Time CTF during college, we had glowsticks attached to us indicating which team we were on. Maybe if we implement that we might reduce the risk of running into each other. As well as maybe setting up some hazard glowsticks around trees so we don't run into them.

Thank you for the suggestions, Nino. We've always used glowing necklaces for the night games, and we have tried to identify obstacles in the past, but we need to be more diligent. Of the four accidents that have taken place at night, two were due to players colliding, one to my soft skeleton, and one to collision with a fixzed obstacle. The last was not a serious accident.
